Cam Timing - what do you prefer?
There are a lot of ways to go here. I'm looking over cams in the 224*-236* range where it seems most of us fall. I've been collecting pros and cons of each design, but I wanted to see if anyone cared to vote with their preferences, share their opinions, etc.
So with that said, which do you perfer?
Thanks in advance for any & all contributions!Hammer - hammertime.us

Well, you guys are talking about a lot more cam, but I know you are both running more cubic inches as well. Any particular reason you chose a split over the others?

Big cubes...bigger cam. The more air you are moving the less 'big' the cam feels. You have to feed those cylinders somehow...you almost need a bigger cam to allow them to fill up.
My old Lunati grind actually had a higher duration to cubes ratio.
254/402 = .631
234/346 = .676
(At least I think that is how it works. Basicly the new cam should act roughly the same in the 402 as the Lunati acted in the 346.)
I can't really answer your question though. I honestly don't know exactly why the splits work well. I know how a cam works and what it does, but I can't explain why any one type of grind is better than the other.
I have only used split duration cams to date and have always made good power with them.
My old Lunati grind was a 226/234 554/575 112 that gained me 41 RWHP on the stock tune. Would have been great for S/C, or even nitrous. Did fine N/A though as well.
This post may appear jumbled. Blame Jack Daniels.

What you said makes perfect sense. More cubes need more duration to fill the cylinder adequately. A radical cam in a 346 is much milder in one of your 402's.
My experience in the past has been with SBC engines, straight up grinds like comp's high energy hydraulic. Seems that most companies who grind cams for TPI, 5.0 EFI and LT1 engines are splits. Probably with good reason, as the OEM's tend toward that as well.
Just wondering if there is another school of thought out there that bears discussion.

depends on the application. the cams job is to open and close the valves at the right time to best fill and empty the cylinder. and your only looking at one point of a cams total lobe profile.
heres and FM13 for example
.050" 230\232
.200" 151\150
.006" 280\284
my own custom cam also is split and reverse depending on what duratiion point your looking at. i had mine doctored so i know .006 too .300
