    408 Stroker parts list...

OK this winter i am planning on building a 408 stroker i have an lq4 engine sitting around and am going to use the block for the build and am wondering if those heads are good for this build or are the ls1 heads better? ... I'm trying to create a parts list and price list for this build and have the basics so far...
    >rotating assem. 408ci $2,159.99
    >Edelbrock manifold 7139 $369.47
    >4L60E Trans Rebuild $875
    >B&M Trans Pack $85.12
    >Yank Converter $725

I'm having trouble on picking injectors cam and valvetrain... I'm also planning on ls6 vallycover but dont have the cost yet... i will be doing all the machining my self and all the rebuilding and assembling... what else do i need to be looking at and prices?

    Thanks

    2000 Grand Prix GTP
    2000 Trans Am WS6 M6

    Ported Oil Pump
C5-R or Double Roller Timing Chain
    LS7 or Caddy Lifters
Hardened Pushrods (measure for these after you have the cam, lifters and rockers in)
Racetronix Fuel Pump and Hotwire Kit
LS6 Heads (243 casting) would probably be your best bet there

I'm not sure what cam or injectors...though you should ask Mr. Luos, he has a 402 putting down some nice numbers.

For heads Id look into a set of L92s maybe ported if you so desire, cam will probably be better as a custom order since the L92s like a wider split cam, and a factory LS3 intake, TB, and injectors (seen them handle 502rwhp @ only 80% duty cyle) will provide plenty of breathing for it as well. Seeing as you appear to be doing this on a budget and not an exotic stroker, these would be the best bang for buck IMO.

Are you planning a Vic Jr intake? Where are you getting the H/C pkg from?

That 4L60E rebuild won't last 10 minutes... It takes one hell of a 4L60E to hold up to that kind of torque/power...

Which TSP cam and heads? I ran the Texas Giant in my 408 and loved it... I had a set of ported 243 heads, but thier 5.3 heads are great bang for the buck...

I would stick with the PRC 5.3 heads, and I would go with either the Texas Speed Giant cam or at least the Magic Stick 3 - the stroker will swallow up a cam in a hurry...

If you need overdrive, I would go with a 4L80E build... if not, a built TH400...

when I dropped my 408 in my GTO I already had my 4L60e built up, I hate to say it, but LSXz28 does have a point... not saying you can't build a great tough as nails 4l60e, but not for that price...I had over $2,500 just in parts for my tranny....but it is bulletproofed.

I'm also running the Edlebrock Proflow xt...it is a TALL intake! 10.5 inches from belly pan to top. in my GTO I had to cut a hole in the hood and put on a scoop, in the F-bodies you WILL have to notch the cowl and lose your passenger wiper.

dont get me wrong, it is a GREAT intake at a GREAT price, but you WILL have to mod to get it to fit.......have you ever driven your 400+ci stroker down the road at 7,000 rpms?....the sound is INCREDIBLE!!!

alright well my transmission rebuild price isnt fully updated i dont have the price of hardened output and input shafts in there and so on thats just the disks and sunshell and w/e comes with it so i fell that i can get it to hold 650hp.... but i have also been thinking about a 4l80e... i still have some thought left in this cause i need a motor before a tranny lol.... i know everything i need to know about the edelbrock proflo xt on what i need to do about mounting it and am prepaired to do w/e it takes to get it to work... i feel its the best intake for the money i can get if im not mistaken.... back to the tranny im looking at "monster in a box ss 4l60e" rebuild kit which i think is good up to 650 i know the input and output shafts wont handle that at all but do you guys think for the money that the 4l80e trans is better for the money? Im doing all of the work on my own so there is no labor prices invalved its just parts.....

Don't know anything about the rebuild kit you are talking about... but, like Mark, I put over $2500 in parts alone into a 4L60E and still the clutches wouldn't hold up to a bunch of power... you just physically can't fit good enough clutches in a 4L60E. You can try it and see how long it will last. I had nitrous in my future, so I freshened mine up and sold it and went TH400. So, I guess it depends on how much you want to mess with it...

for the trans i say go with http://www.performabuilt.com/ they have good stuff and a sponser here on the site. as for your h/c set up i would call a good comp like tsp and talk it out with there tech guys as what you want from this car and they can get you linned up with the parts you will need to get it done right the 1st time. you may want to ask about the intake as will i dont think the one you want is going to fit. after you know what parts you want try and talk to ky speed and see what they can get you on prices. thay have alway done a good job and getting me the lowest price i can find.

ok i got a question not trying to start anything up but how do you guys spend 2500 for your 4l60e parts when at performabuilt.com you can spend 2490-2735ish? for a fully built trans that can stand 700rwhp with a converter?

I don't know what exactly he puts in them or how good his guarantee is... also don't know if the price of the parts has come down - back in 2004 when I did mine, a Beast sunshell was over $800 alone... Add in hardened shafts, clutches, servos... it added up quick. And I haven't seen any feedback on his convertors, but I would run a Vigalante if I was running a 4L60E, and they are $800ish as well...

you paid that much? they are under 100 bucks now.... i think I'm going to pass on performabuilt i tried emailing him with questions and i didn't get a real good answer... i feel that i can get the 4l60e built with converter for under 2k... I'm looking at "monster mega SS" rebuild kit from eatmyshift i feel with that kid converter hardened input and output shafts it will do just fine for what ill be asking for now... i also have a friend i work with that has a built 383 lt1 with a 4l60e and he makes easily over 500 at the wheels...

Don't quote me on it, but I think I paid around $70 for the Beast sunshell.
Went with Hughes Performance kevlar chutchs and steels, Raptor R input and output kits, Transgo Hd3 shift kit, 5 pin planets and there were a few other parts that went into it that I can't think of at the moment....like said above, it added up quick lol

I could be wrong - one part was that much alone (they were just starting to come out with those parts then) - that seems like an eternity and small fortune ago... After I went to a TH400, I spent so much money on that car it wasn't funny... 408, heads, nitrous, cage, etc... But it was worth every penny!

Have you given much thought to the camshaft? I recommend sac up and go w/a solid roller. If I had to do my 408 rebuild all over again, that's what I would do.

Here is a nice one by Comp Cams:

Let's face it, Comp Cams knows how to make cams. They probably forgot more than anyone of us will ever know about cams...

I know cubes make a huge difference in cam manners. My cam (238/242 .595/.595 112lsa) was VERY bitchy and peaky in my 346, but alittle too tame in my 408.
408WS6 is right though, can't beat a conference with the experts
