    Cutouts?

Is the effect of dumping my exhaust the same as on a v8?
Would the sound be really loud and raspy? or just loud?

    Would this be worth it?

It will be very loud and raspy. Trust me it's not a pleasing sound.

So it will prolly just end up sounding like a loud exhaust leak?
So what makes the difference between the sound between mine and a Trans am Cutout?
And why is it so much deeper, and less crappy of a sound?

Even a v8 sounds raspy but the tone that comes from a v8 is much deeper than a 3800. Cats would probably tone it down but i wouldn't even consider it without them. Not sure what you're planning.

Are you looking for power or sound?

Im just looking for new cheaper ways to add a little bit of power to my car, I know cutouts arent a 100hp gain, but its just something else I could add, but Sound plays a big part of it too

I know when shopping for things like a cam, Sound should be the last thing to look for, But didnt know if it were the same for having a cutout...

I also have my cats still

Reason for asking all of this, I was at a carshow this weekend, and my friend started his trans am up, and was revving it and i was almost deaf lol, he has nothing done to it but a lid and a dump

My personal opinion is you should just save up for a better flowing exhaust. You could just unbolt your exhaust and hear it dumped if you really want to know what you'd be in for.

I mean as of right now, I have a Magnaflo exhaust with my stock cats, still has the stock manifolds on it at the moment,
Anyways, Ill prolly just end up unbolting the exhaust like you said, and just see what it sounds like, then go from there

    Thanks!

Power gains aren't worth the price.

Well i mean I can have the cutout peice put on there for free, The shop class teacher at my school also owns an exhaust shop, and he could bring my car into his class, and teach a lesson on it, but at the same time, he knows what he is doing, and he will be the only person messing with my car. So the factor for money to gains isnt an issue, I'm just worried about a really bad rasp

Get the nitrous back from your old man and have the teacher do a class on that

I'm not sure about the exhaust setup on a V-6... but this should work. Disconnect the mid-pipe from the back portion of the exhaust (right in front of the rear axle -- if you have a connection there). With the exhaust unhooked, secure it with wire so it won't rattle against anything and fire up the car. That'll give you a good approximation of what it will sound like with a cutout before you go buy one.

i havent heard a 3800 with a cut out but most v-6's that are straight pipe sound like ass IMO but thats just my opinion. However if you were going to be using it to get a little more power then i say do it just make sure that you put an electric cutout on it unlike me where i have to use a lift or a jack to open or close mine everytime

BTW i noticed a little better MPG's with it open too

The fact that the OP is still running a cat (or cats) may help with the sound. Won't know though until he actually tries it. The nice thing with a cutout is that you do not have to run it wide open to gain some pipe tunes. He may find a better sound part way open versus all the way.

hey i have a 98' camaro 3800 and ive wanted to put something on it to give it some sound without making it sound like a cambells can with rocks rollin around in it, if u find something that works and doesnt sound crappy could you let me know how you did it?
My fiance wants to put a cutout on it but i dont want it to sound bad, hes got one on his TA and it sounds A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! but once again, dont want it to sound crappy, and of course a little extra power wont hurt :P

Cutouts will be louder than you'll be able to stand.. You're parents (afteryou) will like your car even less bro too.. There wont be much of a power gain either if any, may even loose power. 3800 is not a raspy engine with open exhaust.. It's just an extremely loud drone of a 2 valve 90* v6.. If you want a good yet cheap sounding setup get a set of the tubular manifolds from the newer 3800 cars (f-body).. Then do a cat back of your choice.. Or get a set of headers and go from there.. The headers for our cars are usually setup with only one collector so you wont need worry about a "Y" pipe either.. Good luck..
