Does it move up and down if you hold the wheel? Unless something is broken internally it can be fixed. You must completely disassemble the column. There is 2 or three bolts that can loosen over time. Tighten with some loctite and it will be good.

The column is a breeze to change out- done it a couple times on mine.

    1. Take the lower dash panel off (four screws), unplug the trunk release button.
    2. Loosen bolts at the floor where the plate meets floor (three or four 13mm bolts- I think).
    4. Remove bracket under the column. (Two 10mm nuts).
    5. Remove two 13mm nuts that hold the column up to the dash.
    6. Remove the bolt that holds the column to the knuckle.
    7. Unplug all the electrical.
    8. Yank it out.

Yep. It's that easy. And yes, I've done this a couple of times.

Now, if the tilt has play in it, it is because of the bolts at the tilt mechanism have backed out. This is a problem that GM tilt columns have had for eternity- my 71 Chevelle did the same thing. You have to pull the column apart, and then there's a special tool you use to take the pins out from the tilt so you can get to the bolts.
