Hey, I got an estimate of $450 from a shop to replace just the front shocks. Now, mind you that's me suppling the shocks and they doing only the labor. Does this sound like a fair price?

It took me about 2 1/2 hrs doing it by myself Saturday. I followed the directions in the sticky thread and it was ridiculously easy. 450 is crazy for just labor!!!

2 1/2 hours really? Have you done it before?
Before I took initiative to do things on my own, i paid like 550 to have a shop do it. I didn't have the tools or the time to do it. I broke a shock on vacation.

never on a camaro. its so easy to do! And I'm no mechanic, occasionial wrenching on my own vehicles. The only PIA was the torx bolt under the brake master. I loosened the master and used a torx socket on the end of a pair of vise grips to get it off and back on...LOL... other than that I borrowed a set of spring compressors that to be honest I dont even think I really needed. My passenger strut top nut broke off as soon as I tried to break it loose and I hadnt even put the compressors on yet and it just barely popped off. And the new ones fit on and bolted down without needing to be compressed...? But to be safe you should use them to at least take them off.

Both front shocks replaced, labor, and two shock mounts? i forget what they are called, the boot or something....damn't, can't remember. If i did the work myself i would of remembered what it was. I will do my next set so i can help others do theirs.

the way I looked at it was the money I saved on labor I was able to spend on the premium Koni's I really wanted.

You can get it done cheaper I'm sure or do it yourself. Most shops don't like when people bring in their own parts so they make up the the lost profit from the part with an increase in labor. Assuming the shop has a 65/hr shop rate than they're quoting you 7 hours of labor for a strut job that takes 2.5 regular service-3.5 severe service hrs to do. Hope this helps.

honestly seems high to me. I would shop around and do springs at the same time, might as well if they're going through all the trouble of shocks anyway

^ +1 Do springs now. I thought I wasn't going to do springs when I got my car and just did shocks and not two months later here I am about to pull off everything all over again to put springs on. Save the headache and do em together. No matter what you think as a member of LS1.com you WILL eventually be doing springs. Needless to say if you are doing shocks and springs do I even need to mention the need for SFC's?????
