You sure can. Depending on your gearing and what class you run (or end up in), they can be made to work very damned well for autox.

I wouldn't say a lot.... In the day a lot of them did in L98 Camaro's and 'Vettes, but that's largely because the L98 only came with an auto and the torque and they way the gearbox worked didn't hurt the car. I don't know many that would choose to run a auto over a stick if given a choice. I later converted my '91 L98 Camaro over to a T-5 for autox when I changed classes.

Red- 1998 Camaro SS
Before my mods I always got put in F stock in my SS and it’s an auto. A4 or M6 the difference is not that big, really it just comes down to driver skill and preference.

I understand... but the auto does not effect the car's classing.
The differences are there, and can be big depending on what gearing the car has (for instance a auto/2.73 is a big disadvantage to vs. an auto/3.23 or 6-speed/3.42 car in how useful 2nd gear is).
It's a moot point. He has what he has and should go autox it regardless. If he's buying for the purpose of autox and track days as a big priority, then by all means get a 6-speed car. If not, just have fun.

Red- 1998 Camaro SS
No A4 or M6 does not affect class. All 96-2002 Camaro/Firebirds with V8s are all in F Stock. Now 5 years ago the SS and WS6s were put in super stock with the new c5 Corvettes, but they changed that back to F stock a year or so ago. Personally I liked the super stock class because it was a huge challenge and its always sweet to out run a C5 or C6 Corvette with a F-body.
Also Firehawks are not eligible per this years SCCA Solo classing.

You can race one.... Not in F-stock. You can run in them in other classes. And why can't you? Because of things like you've seen above when parts can be added "by request". That's not how cars that run in stock category work.
Please before you judge the rules, understand the rules.
