    Trans Fluid Change

I was looking through the manual and found the scheduled maintenance page. Here it says "Manual transmission fluid doesn't require change." Is this true? Isn't a fluid like everything else and break down?

I'd change it. Do mine every couple years.

Transmission fluid should be replaced ever 10,000 miles or 1 year which ever comes first.

Oops. Mines at 80k and far as I know it's never been changed. How hard is that?

Had it checked at 74k and the guys said it looked good.

What I posted is what six speed inc recomends for there tranny's, and they know there stuff. Its not hard at all, theres a plug on the pass side to drain it then theres a fill plug on the drivers side. Most recomend getting a hand pump to get the fluid in, the fill hole is in a tight spot so you can't just tip the bottle upside down and pour. You can ram the bottle in the hole and squeeze it in but that can be messy. The hand pump is your best bet.

That probably helped contribute to my current suck situation with my clutch.

It appears the design and conditions in these 6 speeds does not break down the lube so unless it gets contaminated the factory oil will last the life of the component.

But to replace - any Dexron III should work fine. I would probably want a synthetic in there but it's apparently not necessary. Seems strange putting ATF in a manual but that's what the sticker says. I guess loose tolerances and hardened components do not require exotic lubricants or cushioning.

    From another forum

What fluid should I use in a stock trans and where do I get it?

Answer: Regualar atf is gm recomended but Mobil 1 ATF or GM Synchromesh are also good or perhaps better options. You can get them at either the auto parts store or for the GM Synchromesh that is from the dealership. If your looking for GM syncromesh you can get it cheaper(about half the price) at the parts store as pennzoil syncromesh(pennzoil makes sycromesh for gm).
