Trans Fluid
I have a '99 Z28 6spd with 71,000 miles on it. I bought the car with 60,000 on it and assume that the trans fluid has never been changed. I have no problems with my transmission, but figure that it might be good to change it. I have heard though that since the fluid has been in my trans for 71,000 miles that changing it now could have a negative affect on it. Thanks for your help.

Hugger Orange/W stripes- 1999 Z28 M6
More of an AT problem
I really think the fluid problems are more associated with long-term mileage between changes in automatic trannys.
I just bought a '99 M6 with 66K and I doubt the last guy ever changed the fluid. I will.
I'm not a good resource of knowledge for the F-bodies being I just got my first one, but I think you are better off changing the fluid now than just hoping it will be okay for another 40K.
Good luck,
John

Well ,the trans only takes 4 qts. And while its true the trans has no filter, it does have several magnets to trap any normal wear "fines". It may be a good idea to change trans oil at the first engine oil swap( 3500mi) to clean out any break-in but to continue to swap the trans oil at engine oil swap intervals is wholly excessive. It will not hurt and is expensive so if that makes you happy go for it.

I heard though that after my 71,000 miles the trans is used to the fluid that is in there and changing it could be bad. What about 71,000 mile old fluid? Not your 3000 miles old fluid

If you read you owners manual, it recomends changing manual tranny fluid only every 100k miles, some years even say changing manual tranny fluid is not ever required. I dont agree, I think you should change it every 40k, but on an auto every 30k. New tranny fluid has alot of chemicals and detergents in it, and can hurt your tranny if you change it to often. Its differant than engine oil.
But 70k miles is not alot of miles, changing it wont hurt it, so go for it.
Just my opinionLast edited by preston1980; 05-14-2006 at 12:58 AM.
