    t-56 grinds in 5th gear..

Well heres the deal, my 99 t-56 no longer goes into 5th gear, if you try all you get is a lot of grinding. It started out that it would grind a little going into gear, it stayed like that for a while but eventually got worse. Now it no longer goes into gear at all. All other gears are fine. Its been like this for about a year now, I simply skip 5th all togather when driving.. I kind of miss it tho and will be pulling the trans sometime soon to put a new clutch in anyway.. What are the possible causes?

Well it "could" be a shifter issue. Sometimes on aftermarket shifters there is an adjustment screw on the front side that needs adjustment. You could try backing this out and see if it helps, but normally though it would affect more than one gear I would think.

My guess though is internal damage to the transmission. Worn or damaged synchronizer/blocker ring

Mine did the same things but started with 6th gear and eventually worked its way through 5th then 4th and reverse. Synchros were the culprit.

    Try this:

Start the car with it in neutral, leaving the clutch held down. Then try and shift into 5th. Does it grind, go in smoothy, or is there excessive resistance??

Then you have a clutch issue as well, because no internal transmission components should be rotating when you follow that exact procedure.

yep slave cylinder is leaking.. just wanted an idea what to look for when i pull the trans out on monday.. havnt been able to use 5th gear for about 2 years now.. figured it's a good time to fix it since the trans is comin out anyway.

It also grinds as soon as I start to let the clutch pedal out if I attempt to start the car with it in 5th gear.

Hmmm...you might have a bent shift fork or synchro. It shouldn't grind like that unless the its not all the way in gear (ie bent shift fork isn't pushing the slider all the way over into gear)

    Agreed. Definitely something internally damaged.

I'll let you know what I find, going to pull it apart next time I have some free time at work. Had an hour at the end of the day today so I pulled it out.
