gears in a stock rear
would it make sense to put 3.73's or 4.11s in my stock 10 bolt?i didnt realize gears are only 180 bucks or do you think the risk of poping the rear is much greater with higher gears in the stock 10 bolt...(long tubes exhaust and tune to come soon as well) right now only CAI

if you have a M6 you should just wait till you can get a 12bolt or 9", i have an A4 with 373 gears, in a 10bolt, and 3600 stall, i pull 1.67 60" and have not had a problem yet

Gears
I've got 4.10's in my stock rearend (02 SS M6) and haven't had any problems. I don't go to the strip and have Goodrich G-force radials, if you don't try and tear up your rear you should be OK but if you use sticky tires and dump the clutch watch out.

so 4.11's wont put any more stress on my rear than the stock gears?

Gears
I'm not an engineer but the the pinion gear was noticably smaller for the 4.10 vs the stock 3.42 so I would assume it's weaker. As far as more stress I don't think the gear ratio makes any difference, it's really a matter of how hard you launch and how soft your rear tires are that will determine if your rearend grenades. Basically the stock rear is small/weak and not made for hard launches especially with a manual. If you just drive it around it would probably last forever as long as it's set up right.
I like my 4.10's but don't take it to the strip, I may do that eventually but my car is not a daily driver so I just use it for fun and destressing drives.

if you have an m6 and go with 4.10s you are going to lose most if not all of first until you get some good tires
even with brand new kumhos out back on the stock rims i couldnt catch in first at all, unless it was a really warm day
but once i got my 315 nitto 555's on some 10.5 inch rims i loved it and you can feel it for sure
if you have an m6 take it easy at the track, first launch with that and my rear is popping

i dont race the car on a track, dont really launch the car, just wanted to see for street if 4.10s or maybe a slightly lower gear would hurt the rear over stock gears(whicih i believe are 3.23s?)

Here's my $.02. If you have a M6 car and are looking to have a little more fun on the streets, then 3.90's or 4.11's are the way to go. As for bombing your 10 bolt rear, I would recommend you keep a street tire on the car and try to avoid dumping the clutch at a dig. Slapping drag radials and trying the same would have an even greater negative impact on the rear.
Personally, I went with 3.90's in my 2002 SS. Since I'm still running the stock 10 bolt, I've kept Riken Raptors on the back and do most of my racing from a 2nd gear roll and up (1. because I can't get even a bit of traction in first and 2. because I could likely kiss the rear end goodbye if I did dead hook in first a few good times). The gears make driving on the streets much more fun and it hasn't had a terrible impact on my highway gas mileage. In the city, I simply end up using 5th and 6th gear much more than I would with the stock 3.42's.2002 Camaro SS M6, 2.5 PRC 5.3L heads, TFS 228/230 cam, FAST 92, bolt ons + a 10 lb bottle in the back.
1989 Corvette L98, A4, Full bolt ons, etc.

gears and install your probably looking at 4-500 dollars I think i paid 600 dollars one time to get a warranty...so they would replace the gears for me... but you can usually get gears installed for 250-300... much cheaper than a whole new rear axle... but if you break enough times then it gets expensive... plus and minuses... 4.10s are fun though :P

Navy Blue Metallic- 2000 Camaro SS
Your going to be alot happier with the 4.10 in an m6 I have them and love it I have the stock 17in rims on my SS and I take it to the track and also race on the street with the DR's on it with no problem yet*knocking on wood* I've seen guy grenade the rr ends on stock gears and on lower gears I launch mine about 2500-3000 not real high but high enough to pull a decent launch. If you eventually changing the rearend any how go for the 4.10 my theory is I will run the 4.10 untill I pull it out or blow it out.
