Do you hit 4th gear when drag racing?

I was just wondering who shifts into 4th and who leaves it in 3rd when drag racing?

I always leave it in 3rd and hit the rev limiter about 25ft before the finish line. I cross the line at about 101-102mph.

My friend with an SS shifts his into 4th and he crosses the line at about the same speed.

My car is stock and I ran a 13.700. but my friend has lt's and exaust, plus free mods. He ran a 13.5.

I am right around the redline (6000) in 4th on a 1/4, but then again I have 4.11s. Don't tell your friend and throw 4.11s in the rear and have fun with him...LOL. 4.11s are perfect for drag racing, in the 1/8th you are at top of third and in 1/4th you are at top of 4th.

Do whats more practical to you, 4.10s/11 is going to have you on and off the clutch quickly when driving around town...Personally i love my 4.10's and i have well over 400RWHP/TQ but it all depends on yourself...And like with any aftermarket gear your bound to get rear whining...I get a tad around 55-65 but im fine other then that...Make sure who ever sets up your rear gears KNOWS what there doing!!!

NeeD4SpeeD, yours whines. I've heard that alot from ppl, I am over the 400 marker myself and I have no noise. Then again, maybe my mechanic was more strict on DO's and DON'Ts. I put around 550 miles mostly city, and did at least 15 cool down cycles (at least 2 hours cool down time)in the process. I never once got on the gas until I completed that break in cycle that he recommended. And it sucked, I wanted to check out the new gears right away, the temptation was great but I overcame it.......LOL.

Also, what brand gears did you get. I got GM.

Ok, let me rephrase the Question...

Do you hit 4th gear when drag racing, and still have stock 3.42 gears?

oh, and I am thinking about getting a tuner soon (few months), what is a safe spot to set the rev limiter to? I have a stock motor and I don't want to blow it up, but I still want to push it a little past 6,000rpm's.

See i got motive which i specifically heard gets no whine... But mine does just a bit and i took the cover off and personally checked the heel and tow and pinion angle and tested the wear pattern and its textbook perfect so im guessing its the motive gears...I think i should have went with the gm gears but oh well mayb when i switch to the 9 bolt...And i did all the cool down cycles like you and i dont put nearly as much miles as u do...cuz i have a beater i drive 2 and from work so im lucky if i put 2K miles a year on my ws6...But u like the gm gears and do you have a 12" or 9" or a stocker rear for thoes gears?

Ryanater, yes when I did have 3.42s I did go into 4th, very close to the end of 1/4. I don't like taking the chance of bouncing off the rev. limiter. Also if you get a tuner, I personally would not suggest raising the limiter, it is set to 6000 stock for a reason. Any higher and you start to chance valve float. Upgrade your valvetrain if you want to go any higher would be my suggestion. And of course throw a good cam in there..haha.

NeeD4SpeeD, yeah I just bought me a beater (for work ONLY) lol...woohoo. But I will still put miles on mine, I bought it to enjoy it and don't plan on selling it, ever, so mileage doesn't really matter to me. Yeah I still have the stocker rear end. Once I do full suspension I think I will go with a 9" with GM gears. But yeah my mechanic told me GM is about the best actually out there for gears.

It's a tough call b/c it does bounce off the rev limiter right before the end. I just want to know if it would take more time away to shift the thing or just let it bounce of the rev limiter for a few feet?

hmmm, good question, maybe shift a little prematurally. You would still end up in your power band anyways.

It looks like right now, you're right at the point where there isn't going to make much of a difference even if you shift into fourth. You're running a 13.7 and trapping right around 102 - 103 (the third gear redline). That being said, if you start to mod your car (even some of the more basic mods such as exhaust, cai, etc.) you should expect to trap higher and there would no longer be a benefit to hanging in third gear for the last part of the quarter mile. If you really want to make it fun, slap a set of 3.90's or 4.11's in there and that will keep drive you well into the powerband in 4th gear.

I just went to the track last night and aswered my own question. YES, shift to 4th. My trap speed went up 2mph. I also ran .3 sec faster.
