you take the shifter out, thats where you put the fluid in....the drain plug is on the back of the tranny, you drain it, put the drain plug in, take the plug on the left side of the tranny out, fill the tranny w/AUTOMATiC III fluid from the top shifter hole till tranny fluid starts coming out the side plug hole......then put the side plug and shifter back in and ur ready to go!!

If you don't have a pump handy....fill at the shifter.

I used a pump to fill thru the upper side hole. It is much more convenient than disassembling the console/shifter assembly. Fluid transfer pumps are cheap at Auto Zone.

I won't synthetics in my T56. Just a good brand new Dextron III. Or GM syncromesh.

I heard something about synthetics eating about an internal gasket (or something of the sort) on the earlier year T56's. 1998-2000.
That is all I need.
Thinking I might go with syncromesh myself when I change it this month.

Just got this from Six Speeds, Inc.
: What transmission fluid do you recommend?
A: We use Mobil 1 ATF in all of our daily drivers. While Mobil 1 is what is desired some customers have trouble finding it in there locations. We also use GM Synchromesh. Royal Purple should not be used in a stock transmission as it has been known to cause premature blocker ring wear.

Sounds like a plan. Put the drain plug back in, pull the fill plug. Start filling, and when the oil starts coming out of the fill hole, you're full. I did mine with the car level.
