    What exactly is a transbrake?

Can someone tell me exactly what it is?
Does it take the place of a stall or what?
    Whats the advantage of it?>
    Can u put one in a 4l-60e?

a transbrake, when activated locks reverse and first together. this way, you can floor the car and go nowhere because both are working against each other. this put tremendous heat and pressure inside the trans. i've read that 4L60E trans don't hold up well to them.

advantage is shocking the tires harder because you'll be at your higher stall speed. you can get lower ETs of course, so long as the suspension and tires can withstand it.

it's only what i've read. no personal experience. can't believe everything you read. if that was the case, i wouldn't be throwing 200 rwhp at a stock motor and hitting it under 3000 rpms.

You would have no reason for a TB without a stall. I've never had one in a 4l60, but i do run one in a 350th in my vega. The difference is like night and day compared to foot breaking. The only problems I've had are, u-joints breaking, and trying to figure out how to get the thing to hook up now that it launches so hard...

I run a 4500 stall. So imagine dumping a clutch at that rpm, thats kinda what it feels like...

I just read your mods. Is your rearend stock? If so, it might let go before the trans. Like I said earlier, there is a lot of shock involved in launching with a TB. It will make a difference in the way your car leaves...

You can put a trans brake on a 4l60E but its going to go bye bye real fast on you. Thats why you see a lot of people switch over to a TH350 or TH400 transmission. The latter 2 transmissions can hold up to it. If you put a trans brake on the 4l60E you just signed its death warrant.

MRR23 gave a very good explination already. I have a 3800 convertor on my car. I can foot brake with street tires on up to about 2500-2600 RPMs and launch from there. Anymore RPMs than that and it just won't hold. With stickier tires and a transbrake I would be able to fully use the convertor and launch from around 3800 RPMs. I don't even think my stage 3 4l60E would hold up to a transbrake though.

Mine was done by a friend so I saved some money. I paid him $1100. That included a shift kit($100) and cleaning up my convertor(another $100). Most of the remaining money was parts, he didn't charge me much bench labor at all. I would say anywhere from $1000-1500 for a well built 4l60E. You can usually save a lot of money if you do the removal and re-install of the tranny yourself, just depends on if you have the equipment and desire to do the labor yourself. We did mine on a driveway with jackstands. It can be done this way, but its not something I recommend doing, it was a huge PIA.
