Stock is around 1600.. Is it going to be a DD, or some drag racing in between ? For a fun DD, I'd go with at least 2800 - 3000... Upgrade the sunshell in the transmission & add an aftermarket cooler.

stock dyno sheets seem to like 3600. go higher if you have plans for a cam. if there is no cam in your future 3600. thats where the power is made, and you stay in your power band with that rpm stall. no less than 3400 for a stocker. lots of people say they wish they would have went bigger. if your looking for a cam it should match your converter. the companies that make the cams and stalls should be able to tell you a good matching stall size. get it with lock up if you plan to keep it a DD. 3600s have lock up im pretty sure. a strong sunshell will beef up that tranny a lot. and a tranny cooler is a must.

probably no less than 3800. when you make a decision on the cam talk to the company to see which stall would be best. its much better to get the stall to match up well with the cam than to have a stall meant for a different power band.

With a stall that big, you should have some suspension mods for traction, and a HD rear end... For a DD, I'd stick with a 3000 - 3600 range... The stock 10 bolt rear might not even handle that... Of coarse, I beat the Hell out of mine !!!

with an a4 it seems that the tranny usually goes out before the rear. it is still a possibility. and the stall doesnt affect driveability. hell a few guys in town that drive stalled f-bodies just seems to raise the rpms a bit. but it takes away no driveability that i noticed. but ive only been in 2 cars and both had lock up stalls. 3400 and the 3600. both cars only have bolt-ons power mod wise. i havent heard any times on the stalls though.

I ran a 3600 locker for a few years, blowing the rear at least 4 times, then went with a 4600 locker stall, and didn't get one launch out of it, blowing the rear again... Now I run the moser 12 bolt, and still blew it once already, after about 3 years. The tranny is the origonal 98 4l60e, built up... The higher the stall, the more traction problems you will have, but when it hooks, hang on !!!

The 7.5" rears are known to be a weak link... Just always keep an eye out for a great deal on a 9" or moser 12 bolt...
