    Transmission Flush

Dare this be done with a 4L60E? Obviously, we do not have a drain plug, but the pan could be dropped and re-installed temporarily with the original gasket. Fill the pan and then start the flush procedure as outlined in the video. After flushing, the pan would be dropped again and a new filter and gasket installed before re-filling the pan. Thoughts?

I've done that before. It is a good DIY flush. I never dropped the pan on the one I did. I just ran it until the hose sputtered a bit (pan emptied), shut it off, refilled and repeated until fluid was clean.

For the Jeep, as it doesn't have a drain plug either, I drilled a hole in the pan and I installed one. They sell universal ones at the autoparts store for a few dollars.

it's not a bad video at all. i'm going to try to my own when the time comes. I was reading the comments and someone ask about having to put the car on "drive" to drain the converter which is not mention in this video. is this true?

The transmission doesn't engage the converter until a gear is selected, so I guess it makes sense. That or neutral to be safer. I'm not 100% sure though.

Our Stratus has a very similar fluid change method set forth in the service manual. You run the engine for a set time in park and the fluid pumps out the cooler hose. Therefore, I believe the pump operates even in park. I am not a transmission guru though, so someone else will have to say for certain.

Funny story -- the manual clearly advised that fluid would come out of the "hose" and not the "tube". Even showed a picture so I was very careful to hold the "hose" to direct the fluid discharge into my oil drain container. My friend started the car and I took about 2 quarts of transmission fluid square in the chest from the "tube" before he got it shut down.

On our cars, if the engine is running, the pump pumps fluid through the cooler lines. No need for putting it drive. Park is just fine.
But I think some Chrysler (and maybe some foreign cars) you need to have in neutral for cooler line flow. Dumb design IMHO.

Thats a hell of good deal. I think ours cost over $100 and we only flush 16 quarts(compared to your 21 qts) through the trans

Good question. I think our cars take 4-5 quarts if you just drop the pan. I would have at least 12-14 on hand to do a flush like this.

Just something I have been curious about. After years of dropping the pan and changing half (or less) of the total fluid, I figured there had to be a better way and went searching. I'll be changing the fluid in our Suburban's transmission this way in preparation for its upcoming towing duties.

IMO, this is the best way to do it. Yah, you gotta crack the bank a little bit, but I think its the safest and easiest way to completely flush your entire tranny system

I used to drop the pan and change the filter in the driveway.
