Shift kit advice ??????????
Hey whats up everyone? I really want to imprive shift quality and firmness on my 2000 SS w/ 63,000k. I have a 3000 stall yank (2.5 str i believe) and it shifts well but it is softer than stock used to be. I have done some reasearch and heard good and bad things about shift kits. I am just looking for some input from people on their experiences with shift kits in 4l60e's........manual shift vs. fully auto, computer / shifting problems, tranny failures, transgo vs. B&M, simple installation?
Any input would be great.
Thanks

I had a TransGo shift kit installed at the time of my Y3000 converter, I also had the 2-4 servo replaced with a Superior race grade servo. I also replaced the flexplate with a TCI SF-29 unit.
I had Sara dyno tuned to have the shift points, torque management, and idle adjusted, along with a few other things.
Sara (01 Z28), hits pretty hard out of first, and coupled to my 3.73 rearend gears is a blast to drive, alot of fun.

Thanks SteveC.........but did the shift kit require the shiftpoints and TM to be reprogrammed? I am just wondering because i'd plan on doing the installation myself and i want to know if I am going to have to buy a programmer or if the tranny will still shift at the proper times (with just a little more kick).
I've read that removing TM is bad for the tranny bacause it subjects the tranny to more stress. Also, i've heard that removing/reducing TM and increasing tranny line pressure will stiffen the shifts similar to a shift kit but will decrease the life of the tranny.
Anyone just install a shift kit without any computer mods or servo replacement?

You should have no difficulty , I would go with the Transgo kit they work very well ,I have used then many times , pcm should not be nessesary with simply instally a shift kit , However I am surprised you didnt have to for the converter many people do ,
Hope this helps

The Yank softened the shifts slightly after the install but it wasn't so drastic that a shift kit was a "must have". I was also thinking about reliability issues at the time where the tranny only had about 20k when installed.......I didn't want to wreck a perfectly good tranny. Now that its getting older and higher milage, a tranny failure wouldnt be such a huge loss especially now since the price of the 4l60e has come down quite a bit. Plus it would be a good excuse to buy a built tranny haha.

TransGo is by far the best shift kit. It will firm up your shifts without making them rough or harsh.

Did you do the install yourself koolaid_kid and if you did was it difficult and/or time consuming?
Also, aren't there different shift kits available through Transgo? Street vs. race applications. I have also seen regular shift kits as well as shift kits that include a vacuum modulator to make tranny shifting possible only by moving the selector, no shift is automatic. Anyone have this kit.....wondering how people like it and if there is any time lag when shifting the selector manually. I know using the selector on a 4l60e has time lag - probably due to the ECU operating the shift.

i went with transgo2 stage 3 shift kit and will never go back to stock. its so much fun running someone that is faster than you but every shift you pull on them until you win. if the same car you will win especially m6

I worked some overtime and paid someone to do the install. He was experienced in the installation and did a fine job. You can do it yourself, but give yourself plenty of time and do it right. I went with 3 washers. I used the TransGoHD2 kit, which is a little more money.
Prior to that, I was using the HPP to firm up the shifts, but the trans still slipped during shifts due to the added power of the STS turbo. The TransGo stopped the slipping without making the shifts harsh.
I don't see the point on manual shifts, since the computer is always faster than a human.

Thanks........ill use the advice and order a kit as soon as I get a little free time.......in the meantime if anyone else has any experience (good or bad)with shift kits in 4l60e's, feel free to drop a comment.
So far it seems TransgoHD2 stage ?? is the way to go for performance and reliability.

The TransGo kit can be set up to use from 1 to 3 washers, 3 being the firmest. I have 3, and it is not harsh at all.

I am glad you fellah's had a good experience with your shift kits, I tried a TransGo kit, had it professionally installed @ SeaTac Trans. in SeaTac..
What a horror show... it wouldn't engage first, if you put it in second it was in SECOND, and when it went to shift from second to drive it had a 2.8 - 3.4 second delay and freaked out the pcm so it went into rev limiter mode,. wow, what a MESS it jammed gears so hard I was breaking traction goin into second at 2200 rpms...
Not that I think they would all do that, but just so you have someone else's experience to draw on.
Tuner in Monroe redid my shift points/pressures with HPtuner or somethin similar and it shifts SWEET now that the kit has been removed.
