    Lost 3rd and 4th

I was driving home tonight. As I entered the interstate I got on it pretty good and when the car shifted into third it just redlined so I let off and when it tried to shift into fourth it never engaged. So I slowed down and the only gears I had was first and second. But about an hour later the car shifted into 3rd and 4th. But when I came to a stop it wouldn't shift into 3rd or 4th when I was accelerating from a stoplight. Any ideas?

Yeah, I figured the tranny was shot. Wierd thing was this particular transmission has been "built" 3 times in the last two years. It never seems right. I have had it done once and the previous owner did it twice.

I am going to take it to a local shop called extreme performance. They are going to build a tranny that should hold with the nitrous. They specialize in f-bodies, vettes, and gtos. Quoted around 2 grand for a stage 3. Should be good for nitrous and still be driveable. It is going to be a while though because of money, bad time of year for something like this to happen.

I didn't realize you were from OKC. I had a friend build my stage 3 from OKC. He charged me a lot less than the $2,000 Extreme quoted you. I can check and see if he is willing to do yours if you are interested. He has a good rep throughout OKC, mine has been holding strong for 2 years now.

my cars the one therobman wus talkin bout. for some reason in our cars the pistoni that shifts into third gets stuck and the tranny just goes crazy... happend on another friends T/A too... mine was 1500 for a rebuild with HD parts, upgraded to a 10 vane pump, shift kit, and some other stuff. but i got wholesale on parts so really it shoulda been around 2k

I appreciate the replies and am interested in the rebuild for less than 2k. Extreme shop stage 3 includes:
    Overhaul w/race clutches
    Shift Kit
    Kevlar 2-4 band
    torque drive kit:
    Hardened input shaft and housing
Extreme duty reverse reaction shell and bearing
    Hardened overrun piston
29 Element dual cage forward sprag
Low and Reverse roller clutch (sprag)
    Super servo
    High output pump slide spring
    Servo release valve
    Spacer Plate Kit
    Filter Kit.

That is the basic rundown of the parts that are going to be replaced or upgraded. I am going to put in a vilgante stall also while I am there. I think this is a pretty good price for the rebuild considering a couple of shops around here wanted 1300-1750 for just a stock rebuild with a tranny cooler (Which I already Have.) What do you'all think. Good or Not?

if i had had the spare car and time to get a shop like that to build me a tranny thats exactly what i wouldve done. but i needed it back asap so i had my shop do it. i dont know all the specifics but all Heavy Duty parts were supposed to be put in and they upgraded the pump from a 7vane to 10 vane, put in shift kit, cleaned up the stall, and some other stuff. only thing i forgot to have em do was a trans cooler

I understand about having to wait to have the car fixed. I am lucky because I have another daily driver (for when I drive more than 50 miles to and from work.) I work in construction so I drive alot. I don't know about the pump being upgraded or not. I will have to ask that one. Soon as I can get the money I will send her in. Hopefully not too much longer.

I think that the pumps are 10 vane from the factory. 13 vane is an upgrade.

Actually a 98 would be a 13v i would think in and ls1 car ,Dont care much for the kvlar band low friction I would have gone with the wide high energy by raybestos or the relined but some people like the kevlar. Im not sure what a hardened overun piston would be I do know they make steel ones with molded seals that come in the very late 4l60e ,
But overall the build looks good
    good luck with it
