If you manually shift it, and it works. It sounds like someone installed a manual valve body shift kit... Or, it needs a transmission shop...

What exactly is doesn't work mean? What happens when you put it in the OD spot on the shifter?
What heppens when you put it in the D selection?
and what happens when you put it in the 2 selection?
Has it done this since you bought it? Has it ever worked normally if you put it in OD or D?

Well, The car runs and everything, But the car doesn't have a shifter.
If you were to start it on OD or D, it just stays there(meaning the car) you just hear the rev of the car like if it was on nutural. If i start it off on 1st or 2nd and shift it it works fine,if i shift 1st 2nd then D Then OD it works fine, other then that D or OD doesn't work.

1 of 2 things.....manual valve body, tranny is about shot. With 150k on the clock it could be a ticking time bomb.

Black- 1998 Trans Am
If the fluid was really dirty The trans is probably about to go. You could go have is scanned to see if there are any codes and to see what the computer is commanding the trans to do. And if the PRNDL switch is working properly.

almost sounds like a manual valve body. the 4l60 in my truck went out (since i switched from a 4.3 to a 5.7 with a 184xxx on the clock all it had was first and od. there is was a valve that wallowed out so it wouldnt hold the valve pressure and it was gonna cost 1200 to rebuild (which included putting a sleeve in that valve) i bought a used tranny from a salvage yard for 500 bucks and put 40xxx on it no problem

First thing to do would be to put a gage on it and see what the line pressure is when you have it in od and d. then check 1st and sendonds pressures.
