Is a 3000 Stall good for me?

I have a guy that swapped his Yank 3000 stall for my buddies 4000. He wants to sell me the 3000 stall for $300. As of now the car is a stock 02 SS Auto. The only thing i am planing on doing is LT headers. No Cam, Spray for me. Do you think i would be happy with this? I was told it could pick me almost 3 tenths. But most likely 2 tenths. Any suggestions?

Well for my current set up, wont a 3500 be too big? And i have a stock tranny. I dont wanna kill it. Plus my buddy that sold his 4000 to the other guy is a master tech, and is doing the install for me, and said the stall is in very good shape. So no rebuild needed.

I suggested the rebuild so you could go bigger, A local here is running bolt-ons and a yank 4000 12.6 in the quarter tranny is fine. It's russian roulette, you don't know if the tranny will live or not let alone the rear. Get a tranny cooler and possibly a deeper oil pan for the tranny to help keep her cool. The whole point of the stall is to keep you in the power band which frankly is mid 3000rpm on up to 5250 with a stock cam. But yah it will be an improvement

3500 is just about perfect for an LS1, even a stock LS1. 3000 wouldn't be bad, but you will probably want bigger eventually. Be sure to get a tranny cooler on there as well.

Yea ill get a tranny cooler. Its a perfectly fine stall. Do you think i can get it cheaper than $300? I was going to try $250-270 range. Cause a buddy of mine is installing the stall and cooler for around 200 or less if i get it.

Well im going to buy it next week. He wouldnt budge at 300 bucks. And i couldnt find a used Yank 3000 anywhere cheaper than 325 + shipping.. so this should all go good.

What caught my eye is the fact that you want to spray the car. With that in mind you will want a tighter converter. Generally ballon plates are a good idea but if you aren't spraying much,,,well then????

Since you are keeping the stock cam, and spraying,,,,the 3,000 stall will probably work out nicely for you.

Not sure what you mean then by "No cam,,,spray for me" but if that's the case, then it comes down to price, trial and error. Meaning.........

Price is cheap enough to give it a try.

The 3000 would be nice. But with just headers I would think you would like a 3500 better. I have a TCI and they have no problems building it to your spec's. I think Yank would to the same. But over the years I have heard bad things hear and on another board about Yank customer service. TCI customer service is excellent. I went from 3500 to 4000. I drove maybe all of 2 miles after putting it in as a 4000. TCI paid to have it shipped to them, fixed it no questions asked and sent it back.

Well for $300 its a steal. And i don't wanna worry about breaking the stock trans. After The stall and LT's i will try on getting a Dyno tune. Maybe full exhaust after. But im going to be pretty happy with what im getting. Since im coming from dead stock.

Keep us posted on your results!

I'm thinking of going with a 3k stall for my car too, so I'd love to hear your impressions of it once you make the swap.

    Thanks!

Got the stall installed today! I can foot break it to about 2200 rpms before spin. I can feel it a bit. But i guess i need to get the shift points and the line pressure tuned when i do a dyno tune..

But that's about 2 months down the road. Getting LT's soon, then gotta get a Frost tune, or a local dyno tune.

But do you think i will be happier after i tune? lol, my first words where when i drove it was.. ''wtf.., i spent 500 bucks on a slight higher launch??.. WTF?? My mpg is SHIT.."

That sounds like a very tight converter. A tune won't change how the converter acts. Generally the tune is necessary for your engine misfire sensitivity.
I never had to touch my shift points after a loose feeling 3400 converter swap. Sign of a good converter that isn't blowing through the shift points. With your converter as tight as it sounds, I wouldn't think shift points would have been affected at all. As I said,,,,mine weren't.

My 3400 is much loser than that, and I only lost 1 mpg driving around town. Your mileage shouldn't have changed much at all.

Maybe it was bc i was floored most of the time and i didnt really notice it. I was seeing how it was. This morning i took it out for a run, it seems to be doing good. But as my buddy told me, im the kind of guy that wont feel a mod unless its a cam or spray.

You were braking the tires loose on the stock stall, what made you think it was going to get better tires!!!
