2nd gear take off

I have a 00 ws6 and if I put the shifter in 2nd the first time I take off I take off in 1st. The car shifts into second normally. If I stop (leaving the shifter in second) the car takes off in second gear even if I floor it from a dead stop. I have to manually put it back in 1st or drive and all is good. Is this normal behavior?

IMO I believe it is normal. If you were to turn the car completely off and then restart it, the same sequence would repeat itself. You've given the trans a command not to shift past second gear. Once you're in second it will stay there unless you manually command it into another gear. Mine does the exact same sequence so either it is correct or we both have a problem ! If you manually started in first and manually shifted to second, it would stay there until you shifted or put it in "D".

^^ you guys freaked me out....at first i thought you were talking about a manual trans... Sorry i was spacing out for a sec......I thought hell mine never did that! Well actually once when it had a broken stop it would pop out of 2nd.
