What muffler to replace my Flowmaster?

The only performance modification to my car is a Flowmaster muffler welded into the stock pipes. I loved Flowmaster 2 chambers on all of my Mustangs, they sounded mean, but I'm not liking the Flowmaster on my Z28.

It has way too much "burble" I guess you would call it. Too much "blub blub blub" sound especially during deceleration. It sounds totally different than what it did on the Mustangs.

I've been told it is an 80 series muffler. I didn't even know Flowmaster made an 80 series until I got this car. Back when I was heavy into performance cars and racing they made 1 chambers(10 series), 2 chambers(20 series) and 3 chambers(30 series). Does that mean my muffler is an 8 chamber?

I want to replace it. I don't necessarily want anything louder, just better sounding. I'm going to get a cutout when I get my long tubes and y-pipe for when I want loud. I just want something that sounds better. Slightly louder isn't a problem, but I'd still like to have a conversation with my friends or wife when cruising with the roof closed and windows up.

The trick is, I'd like it to fit the factory catback pipes. I'd like to leave my tailpipes and i-pipe in place and just cut and replace the muffler. AND it still has to sound decent with my long tubes and y-pipe.

So what do you guys recommend?

    Sound clips would be awesome.

    Thank you in advance.

Magnaflow and Hooker replacement mufflers have been recommended before. I happen to like Magnaflow.

I personally like the hooker aerochamber muffler. Check out ls1sounds.com to find your perference. BTW the 80 series flowmaster is in fact a 2 chamber.

Thanks for the information. It sure doesn't sound like a 2 chamber to me. I just got back from a short cruise. I listened to it a lot and I'm just not liking what I hear.

stock manifolds and no muffler don't sound too bad, plus if you don't like the way it sounds your only out afew dollars for the strait pipe instead of $100 for a nice muffler you don't like.
but I can tell you there is a world of difference between the 80 series and the44's

I have the same set up and I hate it as well. Sounds like a pick up truck.I'd go with a Magna Flow.

yea im still in the process of getting rid of my 80 series for something else. I dont even know if its an 80 series... the guy at the muffler shop said it was when i took it up there... he said with no cats and its still that quite he was sure it was an 80. the 80 on my car is quite like stock even with no cats!

I have an 01 WS6 with 6 spd and I went same route as you, my buddy has a flowmaster on his 98 Z28 and it sounds horrible, and I shopped around and had a hooker aerochamber installed directly in place of the stock pipe, all I have is slp lid and msd plug wires, and its sounds as good as I think it could sound without headers...its a very mellow rumble and going through 1st 2nd 3rd cruising when you get around 2000-3000rpm it sounds really awesome right before shifting....no sloppiness like the flowmaster or loudmouth, its very smooth but very aggressive when the pedal is to the floor...I ran 13.08 with just them mods and I dont know how lol.

not trying to threadjack the OP. had a question regarding cutting off the muffler.

as mentioned earlier, i had my muffler cut off right after the rear axle(the u-shaped pipe), and just left it as is, looked just like a turn down tip. now if i were to have had some pipe fabbed up in place of where the muffler was, continuing out the rear that way i still had 2 tailpipes, would that have affected the sound/tone much?
