    Squeal under hood

    I changed my tensioner, power steering pump, and cleaned the alternator. Drove it for a couple of days and it had a little squeal. It also had a water leak. The water was coming from the water pump. So I changed the pump. Now the squeal is even louder. Sounds like it is coming from the drivers side. So I was thinking the idler pully or maybe something was wrong with the new power steering pump. So I had the bright idea to get my silcone spray. I would spray on the idler pully and see if it quits. If it does then that is what needs to be replaced. So I try to get down in there (while the car is running) with out ripping fingers off in the belt. Get as close as I feel safe to the idler pully and give it a little spray. Lube goes no where near the pully but the squeal quits. After the silcone wears off the squeal starts again. Play around with the spray for a minute and notice it is when the spray gets on the belt is when it quits. If it gets on the back of the belt it does nothing. If it gets on the groves of the belt the squeal quits. The more I spray the longer it will quit before it wears off.

    Even though the belt looks good that is what I was thinking. I saw a thing the other day talking about the belts now-a-days don't start cracking before they are wore out, like the old belts used to. The new belts, the peaks will wear down before the belt cracks.

    I figure it is either the belt or a pully slightly misaligned.

    What brands are better than others?
