Question on headers
I recently purchased a 99 SS with MAC headers and on both sides there is a thin pipe connecting to a flange on the headers on the front most sides. What are these tubes for? There is a canister at the end of each and rubber hoses attach to the canisters and run to the back of the engine.

do you have a picture to show us what your talking about? it sounds like your air provisions, but the canisters at the end have me confused. but they do meet up in the back of the intake and then have another hose that runs towards the front of the car then go underneath to your air pump

I did some more digging and figured out it is the air check valves. I guess "canister" was misleading although I didn't know what else to call them.
Part number stamped on the valve: 22040805
From this number I was able to find the gasket part number 12553617. The gasket appears difficult to locate (I need to replace mine) although I have found a few places that may carry them. Summit has them with a 8 day lead time to ship so I'll keep looking.
Is it worth trying to remove all of this stuff? If it's too much of a hastle I would rather just replace the gaskets.

yea thats just your air hookups...under the drivers side headlight is an air pump that will push air thru your headers to help gets your cats up to temp quicker so they can do their job and filter the exhaust gasses out...alot of guys rip all their air stuf out and tune them out. they make block off plates that you bolt on to those flanges to keep a good air tight seal

also in the first pic, you see a plate and 2 bolts just under the air hookups in the headers? someone has been in there and deleted the egr alreadyLast edited by SteveCZ28; 03-20-2011 at 01:50 PM.

honestly it takes 2 minutes to pull the air hoses out. they are only held in by the 2 bolts per manifold. and you just pull it out. then you could remove the air pump from underneath the car, or just simply un plug it. and youll be set. then obviously put the block off plates on the air plates. and possibly tune it out if you dont like seeing a ses light on, in your dash

Ok good that makes sense...I have dummy cats so not sure how much it's worth to have it removed.
How difficult is it to remove? I know there's posts on here on how to do it, just not sure how much of a pain it is to do it.
What is the part number on Rockauto? I looked there but had a hard time finding it.

the 2 hoses are actually connected to each other, and just go around the back of the intake...if you were to unbolt both pipes from your headers, you can just lift them up and slide them out...dont go yanking on them like the pull starter on a old lawn mower as it might be behind your oil pressure sender and those senders are super easy to snap...ill snap a pic for you and show you the whole set up

Ok now that doesn't look too difficult to remove...just need to get the block off plates and get the PCM tuned. Thanks for the pics and info!
