What makes you think the MAF is going out? What code(s) is it throwing?

Get a stocker on EBay or the junk yard unless you plan on doing any major upgrades in the future. The stock unit should handle any aftermarket cams and what not you could put in a 6. No point in spending the extra bucks on aftermarket.

did you try cleaning it first with MAF cleaner before replacing?

+1 This is probably the issue. There are lots of reports on here of guys having problems that clear right up once the MAF is cleaned. If you do replace it, resist the urge to splurge for aftermarket hype and go with a stock GM MAF. You can look it up at the GM Parts Direct website by hitting the sponsor link at the top of the page.

If that MAF is actually bad, that car will very noticably run like $hit. Take it of and spray it down, just dont touch the tiny wires inside

yeah ive cleaned it twice now, and yes the car runs like crap its putters out an dies sometimes it chokes up on accelration, and my gas milage has been reduced by quite a bit, but i checked out some salvage yards for one there wantin a bill for one and a new one from the parts store is 170 so i figure might as well get the new one thats reliable instead of one thats set on a car for who knows how long and who knows what condition it is in.

Did you clean it with a nonresidue electronics cleaner? If you used an electronics cleaner that leaves a residue, it will not do any good as the residue will prevent the sensor from functioning properly.

I agree.
You don't need a scanner to check the MAF. You can check voltage on it or resistance.
