i use electronic contact cleaner on my maf. You can buy it at radio shack. I don't know if brake cleaner is safe.
As far as symptoms - when my maf was messed up my car would buck and accelerate poorly under any throttle position.

If you do clean it, make sure you use a lent-free rag. You don't want any particles to get trapped on the sensors. Its a highly sensitive sensor that can cause problems under the slightest interference.

You are pretty much screwed the oil maf wires will get hot an sooner than later break. you are going to have to replace your maf. I have seen to many of the K&N filters mess up MAF's. you cant really clean thoses wires, any residue will damage them till they break. sorry...

If you clean a MAF sensor, only use a spray on the small wire elements inside the MAF. Do NOT tough the wires with anything other than the spray.
When you clean up a K&N filter, and then oil it, you are supposed to let the filter sit outside to drain and dry up. Sitting the filter outside in the sun for 1 hour is good. And of course, do not over oil the air filter, it only takes a small amount. If you are getting oil on the MAF, you are putting on way too much oil.
