    LS1 Modifications

I have a stock LS1 in my 98 Trans Am WS6. I am going to be installing exhaust and possibly an intake w/ throttle body. Just curious on recommendations for headers (need to pass emissions) and an intake(LS6 vs BBK vs Fast vs Typhoon etc.) Should the injectors be changed? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I haven't quite decided what I want to spend yet, I want to get an idea on what everything will cost first. I will be moving from Wisconsin to Colorado this summer, so one of my goals is to make up for the lost horse power due to the altitude plus gain a few.

Bang for the buck headers is Pacesetters.. easy to install, good price, etc.. and they have an emmission version.. (as long as where you are going aren't dicks about the headers as ALL longtube headers are technically illegal as they move the stock placement of the cats.. something to look into), as far as intake.. I haven't done the reasearch yet as I am sticking all my time/money into my 87 for now.. but the FAST 90 seems to be the popular one....

If I were you , I might switch to the LS6 intake, the fast 90 is too big for the small mods you are doing now and you can get an LS6 intake used for REALLY cheap. no you won't need injectors, but with an exhaust and intake you should get a tune.
Good luck with the build man!!!

Hmm.. just a thought.. but he said he has to pass emmsiions.. meaning he has to keep his EGR system.. so switching to the LS6 intake would remove that..

One of my friends told me that if I am going to be putting exhaust and an intake, I should switch out the cam. Does anyone think this is necessary?

Necessary?? HELL NO! Thats a HUGE undertaking for someone in your position.. do little steps and work your way up.. when you start talking cams.. you have to match it up with your mods/goals..

True the ls6 intake has no egr, but with the ls6 intake and headers (cheaper without egr provisions), just take off all the egr tubes and put them in a box on the shelf. A tune would turn off the egr and it wouldn't pop codes so he would pass the odb2 emissions test, and as long as he has cats it should fly right through visual inspection.... if it looks factory it shoul pass without a problem.

100% agree. most people start out with the bolton goodies ( exhaust, intake, cold air intake, and more) you can do all the bolt ons and never get a cam. I would highly recomed getting a tune after you do the bolt ons though, the tune will help get the most out of your setup. If you get a cam you need to have the supporting parts i.e. ( exhaust, headers, intake, stall if you have an automatic) you get the most out of matching your cam when you match everything to your Exact needs.
and remember, bigger isn't always better.

you can get the LS6 intake with the egr provisions from SLP. I believe SLP is the only company that has it, its an LS6 intake modified to work with the egr
When i get the money thats what i will be getting

Shorty headers will allow you to keep the cat's in the same place.

If I bought a GM version LS6 intake I would have to eliminate the car's EGR stuff? If so, then if I bought headers I would have to buy ones that are not set up for EGR?

If you get the mids or long tubes you'll have to move the cats and that's when you'll fail the emissions test. Just get the shorty's with a high flow cat if you want to see the best gains.

As far as the intake is concerned wait for Weiands new LSX intake to come out, whenever that will be and buy that. It should prove to be a solid bolt on.
