    LS1 modification...yes or no...what do you think

hey im just tryin to figure out what i want to do with my TA. It's a 99 and shes got 99K miles on..the body is excellent and so is the engine and its got some G2 performance parts on it and all that good stuff but im thinking of putting some more performance parts on it...is 99K too many miles to be thinkin about engine modifications or not. id like to hear what some of you have to say...but like i said... the car is in excellent condition.

its never too late to start moddin. but watch it if you go throwin nitrous at it. havin that many miles it may not respond as well as say one with 50k miles. but headers, lid, tune. none of these will hurt it even if its got 300k miles on it. if anythign it will help it becasue it dosent have to work as hard to make what power it does. if i were doign it, i would run some synthetic through it. this will help condition all the seals and rings. give it a good inspection with it running and hot. if you can go on a long trip and when you get home dont shut it off, drive it up on ramps and get under it and look for leaks and smoke. rev it up by hand and have someone watch the main seals and the pan for leaks, while you watch up top for any leaks. listen for vaccuum leaks. and if it all checks out go for it.

That's not many miles at all, I started modding my third gen around 145,000 miles and kept on till I pulled the motor at 211,000. It responded well at every mod I threw at it, now by LS1 Z-28 has 111,000 daily driven miles and runs stronger than most lower mile 01-02 cars. It just depends on how you take care of it... Good luck

let her breathe and get some gears and a stall if it's a auto...with some sticky tires you'll be able to walk 95% of the cars on the road.

yeah thats what i plan on doin to it...i mean you are all right those are some strong running engines thats for sure...ive got someone whos got some gears for sale ... 3:73 and i think 4:10s...its a 6spd tranny and i do a lot of road cruisin so out of what 2 gears would prob be the best...and with that what about some long tube hooker headers ...anyone got em or know anything about how they run on a LS1

If you do a lot of road cruising, you'll hate the 4.10 before too long.

thats what i hear...what about the 3:73s...my buddy ran 3:73 out of his foxbody 5.0 and it had some gettin and goin...will those gears act the same in the TA as compared with performance in that 5.0...he could run pretty good..although not really a good comparison between LS1 and a stock 5.0 cause the LS1 would take it no problem...but what will runnin 3:73s out back for road cruisin and some street ...or is there any other gears that anyone would recommend

For road cruising, I like the stock 3.42 gear. But regarding your question, I wouldn't go any higher than 3.73, given all the road cruising you do. You'll have plenty of the "gettin and goin" off the line, without sacrificing too much road cruisability/mileage.
