    LS1 Granatelli MAF Sensors

I was shopping around looking to see what I can mod next and I came across the MAF high flow sensors. I know they are easy to install, from installing my SLP lid, but are they worth it? Will they actually make a difference? And also it says that if you have any cold air induction you have to buy it with a tune. Would that pertain to me with the Ram Air, or the SLP lid?

One of the chevy high performance mags did a test on one of these recently, and actually picked up around 10 RWHP and about 12-14 RWTQ on the dyno. I was suprised.

Wow! So for $300 that is not a bad mod huh? I think that is my next move. I am still wondering if it will set off my check engine light. It says cold air induction, but I don't know if that means a cold air intake, or if Ram Air and/or a SLP lid will create too much turbulence. You can buy it with a tune. Don't know what to do. What do you think?

Aftermarket MAF's aren't needed. The power gains are from the ECU leaning out.
    Lean = power.
    It always equals detonation.

The stock MAF is good for 500+ HP and is calibrated perfectly for your car. I wouldn't mess with it.

When I put on my Granatelli MAF Sensor, it did not set off any Check engine lights.

    It shouldn't.
Unless it leans you out too far.

Basicly...this mod requires a tune to safely see gains. So tack on $500 to the $300 for it.

There are those that hate the Granatelli MAF. I've tested many of them on the dyno and just about always have seen a gain (anywhere from 3-8rwhp). Unfortunately I can't recall if we've seen 10rwhp increase. Although I have seen a couple that didn't net much gains.

We have calibrated MAFs on all our Project F-bodies. Just my opinion though. You'll find some that like the MAFs and some that hate 'em.

My SLP maf kept setting lean codes until I pulled it off and went back to the stocker. I did not have this forum before I purchased and now will be stuck with it unless I off it on somebody for cheap.

    It isn't just Granatelli.
SLP's does the same thing. I think there is another one out there as well.

    Not worth the cash.

Put the $300 into a tune..hell even a handheld would be better then that POS MAF. You'll see better gains with a predator...and it's actually tuning your pcm instead of trying to trick it.

Stock MAF is fine I'll agree but not 500+ HP.....especially forced induction.....only so much air it will meter before the computer just doesn't know how to process it.....boils down to the frequency.....

I'm confident I picked up a tenth, maybe two, with the Granatelli MAF. However, the service engine light did come on and Chevy dealer diagnosed it as a lean condition but it runs better I'm sure. Does anyone know it it's harmful?

Unfortunately when it comes to MAF threads, it typically gets out of control. You'll have two sides butting heads. I've seen these threads a thousand times since '98 (many times they get pretty heated).

BTW, Granatelli can calibrate the MAF to your engine. If you know your parameters (i.e. lean/rich conditions) they can adjust the MAF accordingly prior to shipping to you. At least I've seen it done way back when. We've had it done for a few customers in the past.

Best of luck with your decision . Any questions, feel free to ask.

Not to familiar with the workings of this site and I asked this question in another thread. Today when I installed a BBK throttle body the small tube on the lower left side of the BBK jutted straight into the larger coolant hose from the intake whereas on the stock throttle body the tube made and abrupt right angle forward which allowed the hose to be connected. Can you help? Thanks, Sam

If you ABSOLUTELY MUST play around with your MAF, get some of the ported end so you can switch them back if needed. My stock MAF has made over 600rwhp with the ported ends, so I think it's safe to say it flows well.

Do the throttle body bypass mod instead of hooking the hoses up. That's where you get a straight hose splice connector and hook the hoses together. Gives you a little more power by not letting the TB heat up.

Keep the stock MAF friend. For the same money you would spend for a aftermarket MAF/Tune you could slide in a cam and gain real RWHP.............
