    THE WS6 THAT COULD

    Horrible Discovery!!

yesterday i made a horrible discovery while i was taking off my wheels and changing my brake pads. the place i bought my car from told me the exhaust was an slp dual dual exhaust. well i just so happen to look at the muffler and what does it say???? Flowmaster....now i dont know how much horsepower i could free up if i got rid of it but it sounds really good and seems to be making good power at the track for me. what exhaust should i look into if i want to run headers on down the road??

Apparently the 80 Series Flowmasters are the worst offenders. They are single in/dual out. Thats what I have on my car, but I'm going with true duals as soon as I can.

Not all Flowmasters are bad, just the horrible 80 series. The 80 series sounds great, but isn't very good for flow.

That pretty much sums it up...

And while the Flowmaster 80 series may not be the best flowing muffler available, you're not going to notice any real world power difference with another muffler on a stock or near stock car.

damnitt, I have the 80 series. I love the sound, but I wanted some HP for my money! at least I got it installed for cheap by a family friend. dropped around 250 bucks. sigh, maybe I'll change it in a couple years. that way my parents wont bitch at me about it.

    Air in and exhaust out

Given the mods you list I wouldn't worry with it for now. Air in and exhaust out are key in making HP. You go to headers and LS6 manifold I would do the exhaust then or soon after/before. IMO

Look at it this way, a Flowmaster may be holding you back 5 hp, 10 tops. You didn't mention if you've done free mods. I promise you that the TB coolant by-pass, air box mod, and especially removing that 1.5 inches of EGR tube (98-00) in the TB/(LS1)intake air flow will more than make up for the Flowmaster "loss".

And by that I mean as compared to more free-flowing muffler systems. Over stock, it's not even an issue.

The free mods are just about free, (maybe $5 for the TB by-pass stuff). How much is a new cat-back system?

My opinion is keep it for now, do all the free mods, and then start saving for a new exhaust system, from the headers back, and do that all at once.

Edit: Sorry, I went back and saw you have an LS6 intake. The EGR doesn't apply now.

you have a cut out all ready so you should be fine, where is it at location wise under the car? if it's electric you good it evens out.

Getting a cutout is a much cheaper and easier alternative to getting another muffler, unless you just hate the sound of the flowmaster.
