Engine Temperature
What temperature do your engines normally run at? Mine has always stayed around the 180ish 190ish mark, but lately it has been heating up pretty quick like getting to 210 and passing that with the a/c off and just idling. No fans are running, is that normal with the a/c off? Once i turn the a/c back on, everything is fine and it stays in the 180's. I have the stock themostat and have already flushed the radiator and changed my oil in the last week. Everywhere I go they say its normal for it to run at 210 but NEVER did it do that before that is way I am a bit concerned. I know this may sound like a minor thing, but my car has never done that and I want to avoid any major problems.

red- 2001 formula
I posted basically the same question a few weeks ago. I bought a 01 formula with a blown LS1 engine and I replaced it and my engine temp stays just slightly below the 210 degree mark and I have a friend with an 02 T/A and his runs the same. But if you say yours has always stayed cooler I would be concerned especially when you turn on your a/c which should automatically run the fans. How does the temp run if you have the heater on full hot with high blower?

Try a coolant flush if it's been a while and change the t-stat while you're in there. Mine started acting like that some months back and that solved my problems.

I already had my coolant flushed on Tuesday, it didnt help. Are any fans supposed to be running while the ac is not on?

My buddy told me that if i switch over to a 160* then I will be running rich and getting worse gas mileage? Is this correct?

The 98 is more accurate than any year after when GM dumbed down the movement of the gage. You can only compare with other 98's as my 2000 is always showing 210 but is closer in reality to 190. I think you should check the temp sensor and get a new stock temp. stat.

Did you bleed the air after the collant flush? That could be part of the problem for it heating up so quick.
And if you leave the engine idling for awhile, the temp will always go way up. That's because the the water pump isn't getting driven to cirrculate the coolant very fast.
And if the temp goes up, turn the heater on full blast, that will drop engine temps some. I have to do it in the summer sometimes. But I got a 160* t-stat in the fall, so we'll see how that helps next summer.

Navy Blue Metallic- `98 Formula M6 HdTp
I had a similar problem on my `98 turn out the thermostat was stuck partially open. Another good idea is to get a manual Fan Switch. I did and have no cooling issues any more.
