it'll thro a code untill you get it tuned out. i have never done it but i think you gotta get a freeze plug to go in the hole you make in the intake, then all the block off plates

Do I need to get the code deleted or will it self clear after I get it turned out?

I think the programmers like Hypertech will clear the code, but unless you get it tuned using LS1Edit or a similar program which actually deletes the code, it'll keep popping up.

You can buy the kits for around $15 I think with all the plugs and hardware. Speed Inc sells a set, and a few others.

What are the pros and cons of doing this?

well wouldn't one of the cons be you're not emissions legal?

a pro would be more space under the hood. I know I hate bumping into all that junk when under the hood.

I did it 20,000 miles ago. I never got the code tuned out. There are no ill effects from having the light on, other than the annoyance of looking at the light. It cleans up the engine bay and makes plug changes easier, especially if you get rid of the AIR system as well. The parts should cost you about $15 and it is an hours work.
