drilling a hole in the Y pipe before the muffler?

i was just wondering about it b/c one of my friends has an old Toyota truck that he did that too and it sounds pretty mean. on a car with stock exhaust of just with a cat-back, how would it change the sound, and what about the emissions? would you have to plug the hole to pass emissions?

Cutouts are 30-40 bucks for the manuals ones like mine. They are cappable for the street and install costs from 10-25 bucks at any muffler shop.

I run mine open all the time, it will teach you to drive more... conservatively in town

a drilled hole doesn't make much sense. Go with what Josh said. Most with cutouts only have 50-75 bucks rap'd up in doing them. For plugging it, the cutout will have a block off plate you can bolt up to it and seal it off.

Agreed. My exhaust is cut after the exhaust manifolds currently (previous owners doing). Can't get over about 2500 RPM without anyone remotely close by knowing exactly where i'm at. Kills being able to play around in town.

Didn't this site have something similar listed under the "free mods" section? If I remember right, they had a how-to for it. It basically consisted of drilling a 1" hole in the intermediate pipe just before the muffler, and another hole on the passenger side tailpipe in close proximity. Then you would put a metal plumbing tube in between the two and weld or braze it in place

But not everyone is going to have the equipment to weld or braze it themselves. And even taking to to someone to have it done, they're still liable to charge you 10-15 bucks just for the trouble of doing it. Which, is roughly what people are paying to have the cutouts put in.

If someone is on that strict of a budget, maybe. otherwise for another 30ish bucks you might as well by the manual cutout. Just my opinion.
