If i were you i wouldn't look into shorties
A cutout would be better on the i-pipe right after the y
My suggestion is to save a few more bucks and get some longtubes
    worth it IMO

    Shorties may help a little
a cutout will probably be better depending on your catback
The mac setup has no cats so that may free up some power

dont know the exact gains but either should help
i personally would do the headers over the cutout

cutouts sound muffed out on stock manifolds imo

    Sadly now demodded :(

01's and 02's have the best exhaust manifolds. They are almost as good as shorties. Since you're lowered the stock exhaust under the tranny cross member (it's flattened) might be best as a round replacement might drag.

Just adding a QTP E-cutout in the I-pipe (the usual place) gave my (otherwise stock at the time) 02 Z28 a 15 rwhp increase when open.

I have the mac LT's and I think a off road y-pipe on my stock setup was lower then my LT's setup.

This^ the y especially on the driver side is generally the lowest point. I have 3" duals and the driver side just before the merge is lower than anywhere else.

MAC mids through GM cats welded in the MAC Y-pipe (MAC cats are awful) gave me about 20rwhp. They are easy to install and tuck up nicely.

Mids and shorties are completely different. Shorties are not worth it they don't flow much better than stock manifolds but mids are a different story. If you have clearance issues mids are a great alternative you lose a little over LTs but not as much as people think.

especially if u replace the awful mac y-merge with a true 3" or 3.5" flowmaster merge. probably within 2 or 3hp of longtubes. only difference will be that the powerband will probably be a little higher in the rpm range because longtubes are usually better for low end while mids are better for high end.

Truth. The ball-flange on the MACs is great for install, not so great for flow. If you clean up the welds and do the collector-mod, the MACs will make nearly the same HP as LTs. Probably won't get as much TQ as LTs, though...

+1. I had the Macs and the Mac Y pipe hung lower than my long tube set up.

I think he is stating the opposite. FWIW, my MACs and Y-pipe tucked up pretty well...

that just means no slp headers. there are some headers that dont hang low compared to slp. i hear a lot of good things about pacesetters and kooks.

why does everyone do a y pipe on these cars? doesn't a true dual exhaust give more flow? i haven't been in the ls1 game for too long yet, but i know the mustangs get the most power with an x pipe, and 90% of f body owners do not use them. is there a reason for that? is there a resource showing dyno tested anything?

Reason is not much space and you can't go over the axle on the driver side. Can go under, but its not as clean as it would be on a mustang.

Macs are actually great headers people over look all the time. They give a good h.p boost also.
