Alternater wire question

I had to replace my alternator today. My question is I broke the 1 wire that goes into the pig tail, I was able to rewire it and everything is good. My question is what is that wire for ? It is very thin and red.

the red wire going 2 ur alternator is the "excitor" wire. basically tellin ur alternator to charge your battery. at least from what i hear. so you gotta have it or your system wont charge.

Exactly right, its a very critical wire.

I did connect it. I had to soder it where I broke it. I left a couple of extra inches of wire so that would not happen again. Thanks for the replies. Now off to the track!

Well, my system wouldn't charge, but it didn't get the alternator/battery light on the dash. I figured it had something to do with the exciter wire. Well, the wire was pulled out of the pin. I was unable to get the pin out to resolder it. It looks like this happened once before because the plug was all chewed to shit and the pin half pushed out the side. I'm pretty sure it happened when a friend put my pulleys on.

Where can I get a new plug today?

u can get one from the dealership @ $35 i think. i went 2 o'reilly & got one 4 about $17. there the xact same. make sure you connect the right wire. cause the new one will have 4 wires in order to be universal to gm's. im pretty sure its the 2nd from the left wen lookin from the front of your car when it is plugged in.
