I know that its a stupid question...but even till today I don't see a difference in an aftermarket lid...they say it has more airflow...but how? It looks exactly like the stock one. I know

Airlid is smoothed and contoured on the underside for increased air flow.
Opening measures 3.5" in diameter for higher air flow.

Aftermarket lids flow better because the baffles are not there, they're smooth instead (see picture comparison above link). Aftermarket lids are also shaped a bit different where they contour into the piping. They also lose the tanks, cleaning up the engine compartment a bit.

I'm not sure exactly why the tanks were there. I assume to hold pressure or to quiet the airlid. The factory lid was designed with the baffles to minimize whistling from the air passing through it. There is a slight whistle with some aftermarket lids. I replaced mine with a SLP. It was an easy fit for me, took less than 10 minutes. A few people have had trouble installing them. Mine fits like a glove.

Here's a good air lid article with some aftermarket comparisons http://www.motorsporttech.com/press/...ay2004_02.html

Side tanks are there to quite down the airflow into the throttlebody. Good for a loss of 10-12 HP. Kind of stupid, huh?

Great article
That pretty much sumed it up for me. SLP airbox lid definitley adds torque. I didnt expect too much horse power from just the lid, but the torque speaks for itself. Thanks for posting such a great article on what is typically the first real mod.

i know that was my first mod on both of my ls1's (ta,Z) and when i installed it i felt a huge differnece. some people have different expectations when installing mods but you have to think its was only 100 $
