I would go with what you want most, try and find a loaner car for a day or two,
cause the sound of when you get it back will be well worth it

The link above is a good write up on doing it yourself, its not highly skilled labor, just takes some wrench turning etc. You should be able to do it yourself over a weekend.
A stall or headers are both typically the first real mods for an auto LS1. You will enjoy either honestly. A stall would benefit you more as far as making your car faster. Some people want the excitement of the enhanced aggressive sound with exhaust though. Really up to you which path you choose. I think you could probably handle the header install yourself though. Maybe you can find someone locally that has experience with it and could help you out.

And if you do headers yourself start spraying all the bolts with pb blaster or something the day before and do it 3 or 4 times.......

yeah i would like to get a more aggressive sound plus horsepower and i read that thread and i know i could do it, its not hard just time consuming. Plus i work five days a week and go to school the other two so i dont have the time for it but i think im gonna go with the headers anyway and just say F*** that and just get it done

it's not hard to install, i installed my long tubes in my 00 ss in about eight hours. Just make sure to buy long tubes cause you will get the most hp with them. Good luck with the installion!
