whining noise from my rear end?
i have this whining noise coming from what i think is the rear end. it only makes this noise when i take my foot off the throttle for deceleration. it is a stock 10 bolt 3.23 gear. i just recently changed the diff fluid and added the additive as well. same problem but only at speeds above 25mph for deceleration. any help on this would be great cause it is really becoming a true annoyance.

most likely ya got a worn bearing in there. howling and whining is almost always a bearing. does it speed up as you go faster or is it just a constant whine?

Was it making the sound befor you changed the fluid?

it made the noise before changing the fluid. but if i keep a little bit of throttle it doesn't make the noise. i'm kinda thinking it may be a wheel bearing. just seems to be too loud to be that. the car has only 65,000 miles and only 4k out on it this year.

Hey Joe, does it change pitch while driving? If so, your carrier bearings might be the culprit.
If you need rear end work in your area, go to Bouchillon Performance Engineering in Hanahan at 937 Commerce Circle(near Remount Road and North Rhett).

well the bearings are pretty easy to replace no matter where they are. especially once ya done em before. i've gone through prob three bearing rebuilds in my car from bangin turns and rippin. you can pick up complete bearing kits for cheap might as well do em all while yer in there.

i had that too when i first bought my car. the rear end had leaked out because apparently "the seals on 98-02 tend to leak". but if u were able to change the fluid thats not ur problem

i really wonder if its the preload or the u-joints. i just noticed some grease on the exhaust that came from the u-joint. can't re-grease it cause it has no fitting on it. guess i'll pull the driveshaft out and press in some new brutes. i'm just not used to having a quiet car like this one.

Run the thicker 140W, that should quiet things down a bit.

Same exact problem
I had the same exact problem with my rear end. I took it apart and as i was removing the c clips all you could see was metal chunks falling out of the rear end the oil was full of metal and the magnet was covered. Come to find out I had no bearing left I had driven the car far too long unchecked. It was only on one side though. Changed out the bearings and seemed to work fine for a couple weeks now I'm starting to hear a little i dont know if Im killing another bearing or not yet as i havent taken it back apart.
What could cause the bearing to just get eat all to hell to where there isnt anything left? And it only does it on one side.

coulda been a number of things really. coulda just been bad parts, could be put together wrong- but as far as bearing's wearing out it really depends on how ya drive. i got my car setup for road racin and i gotta replace my rear bearings quite frequently (more than i should have to w/ normal drivin) from bangin turns. was that chewed bearing on the drivers side? that's the one that goes bad first on mine from bangin off ramps real hard. just gotta listen to the rear-it'll tell ya when it needs new bearings.

well to bring this to a conclusion. i have finally figured out and have made the repair of this stupid whining noise. the bolt for the pinion was coming loose and causing the preload to be off. stopped after setting the preload up again.

the nut was tight by hand, but loose as a goose with the 1/2" breaker bar. i hit it with the impact and torqued it not too tight. amazing how sound travels in these cars.
