whine noise that changes pitch with gear change

the title pretty much says it all. I have a 99 formula. It has about 91000 miles on it. When I got it I was told it had a vaccuum leak and had that fixed. Also had both belts replaced. I am hearing a whine noise lately that changes it's pitch when the gears change. I have an automatic tranny if that matters. The car seems to perform just fine, just didn't know if I should have this noise or not.

Along with that noise I hear a rattling type noise that sounds like a soda can with a bunch nails or something in them rattling around. It isn't very loud. I hear it mostly when I'm at a drivethru and the sound is echoing off the walls.

I just didn't know if any of this should be there. I am more worried about the rattling noise though.

    thanks

Have you tried to pin point either noise? Are they coming from the front, middle, or rear of the car?

I haven't really tried to pinpoint them so much when not driving. I did once. That time and of course when driving they sound like they are coming from the front. The whine noise sorta sounds like a jet engine, just much more quiet. I wish it was a jet engine under there.

From my experience...it sounds like a front pump getting ready to take a crap...but thats just from my experience...

When you turn the wheel does the noise change? I'm trying to see if maybe it's a power steering pump issue.
