Manual specifies DexronIII for both doesn't it?

Did I miss something & give out bad info by accident?

    Pretty sure you are right.
Although I would likely use different brands of fluid depending on which tranny we are talking about.

Here's my take on it. I have a 02 ws6 myself with a m6. Everyone said dex 3 so i went out looked for it at a few auto part stores didnt find it and they all the auto part stores said use dex 4 it replaced dex 3 so i did. I ran the dex 3 for about 4 months and goin in to 1st gear gave me problems it would go in and pop out make a noise same with second and third (wouldnt even go in). So my first three gears were giving me huge problems. Then i said let me try syncromesh because i thought my syncros were fried people on both forums (ls1 and ls1tech) told me on the f body t56 the syncros fry so i tried AC DELCO syncromesh now i have my gears back it still rejects the gears and makes that loud grinding noise sometimes but no were near what it did before. Thats my story. if your intrested the part # is 10-4006 i got it from my local chevy dealership. Its gunna run you more then the dex 3 im letting you no from now so its not a supprise to you but i think it was well worth it.

Ah. So GM upgraded to Dex 4 for the GTO then. I was gonna suggest Dex 4 but I don't wanna give out incorrect info.

Dayum!! Sounds like you have a slave or synchros on the way out. Or maybe some chipped synchro teeth.

WOW....guys heres the real scoop. Dexron 3 is the recommended fluid for autos and manuals. Dexron 4 doesn't even exist, they skipped right to Dexron 6 which is synthetic ATF. GM now recommends Dexron 6 in all autos, past and present, but screw that. Use Dexron 3 if thats what your car came with from the factory. GM changed the name of the recommended manual trans fluid to "Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid." All it is is Dexron 3 ATF. Synchromesh isn't a recommend fluid, but I've heard of people using it. To me, if the T56 is shifting fine, save the extra cash and put in regular Dex 3.

Another vote for "DexronIII", I do not think I would want to run any synthetic oil in my transmission.

I've been running Dex6 in my M6 (02 WS6) even with two runs down the 1/4 with no issues, shifts the same as it it did with the old nasty stuff I drained out of it.

I have no issues with Dex 3 so I am sticking to that.
