Want to run 12's...need advice
Hey guys I really want to get my car into the 12's before I hit up the drag strip 1st. I have a few things though that I'm concerned in modifying. #1 is the want to keep good gas mileage, #2 is to keep the car as street-legal as possible, #3 is not to touch the trans cuz of all the work that has been done with it and the warranty I have on it, and #4 is no DR's or NOS cuz if it runs 12's I want it to run 12's on the street
Here's the specs of my car and what's been done:
'00 Z28 3.23's A4 w/ Y3F kit (a little more weight I guess?) 70k miles
K&N FIPK, plastic MAF ends, TB coolant bypass, GMS wires, Hooker cat-back, PHB, LCA, SFC, STB
And the new trans...
4L60E remanufactured
-New boost valve and sleeve are installed in the transmission pump
-the low/reverse checkball is removed
-Modified pump slide with spacer
-TCC Control Valve, TCC Regulator valve and the Actuator Feed
Limit are replaced and the bores are reamed
-The forward and reverse abuse plugs in the valve body are replaced
-New Pressure Switch Manifold
-New Pressure Contol Selonoids
-The latest design sun shell is installed.
-The return springs in the 3-4 clutch are removed and the exhaust
port in the separator plate is enlarged
-The torque converter is remanufactured using a state-of-the-art
converter aligner/welder
-High energy 2-4 band is used
-High energy 3-4 clutch pack and increased lined clutch and steel
plates (from 6 to 7)
-Aluminum 1-2 accumulator pistons
-All new pump and case bushings
I went for a "Class 1" upgrade, which I think consisted of Alto clutch packs, servo & beast shell larger than the Corvettes, and other things I don't remember. It'll shift HARD, usually ripping my tires between 1-2 on 50+% throttle and WOT it'll smoke em.
I put the ends on assuming it would help with the backfire on deceleration. The car pops like hell if I rev it to redline and then let off. I think I'm going to invest in something like EFI Live 2 or HPTuners. Another alarming thing I noticed was blow-by on just #7 cylinder.Last edited by myk02k; 04-08-2007 at 12:12 PM.

Headers for sure.
Although running on street tires is going to get you. Traction may be an issue.
The stall is the biggest thing though. I bet a stall alone would get you very close once you learned how well your street tires grab at the strip.

I hear you on the headers, might as well go w/ high-flo cats and a new Y then....other than the TC, what could I do to get to 12's?
I'm thinking maybe LS6 intake & UD pulleys? Would a LS6 cam be worth it/gas decrease?

LS6 intake and a pulley swap would be a nice start. You can squeeze a little more by porting the stock throttle body and the bump stop mod. Get yourself a good tune and hope you can find traction on the stock tires.
Otherwise, a gear swap, a street friendly set of drag radials (I love the Nitto 555R once it gets warm) and finally a TC should get you well into the 12's.

Here's what I would do. All these mods will give you more power, better efficiency, better sound, and better fuel economy. Can't beat that for a street driven car.
LS6 Intake Manifold
Long Tube Headers
Underdrive Pulleys
True Dual 2.5" Exhaust
ECU Tune
That should get you mid-high 12's no problem.
If you want more upgrades, go with a stall converter and 3.73 gears. However, both will decrease fuel economy by a few MPG, and the stall will change street driveability. You will of course go faster though

guys he is in CA, so LT's/ORY might be out of the question. I agree, a cam around 224 duration, lid, U/D pulley, and an Ls6 intake, and some drag radials might do the trick...
other than that, i would suggest 3.373's for the rear...

Life's to short to worry about warranty. Get a stall!

Gears, 3.73's, lid, ported t/b, LS6 intake....and drag radials... you will be fine...

Don't hate cuz it takes you 200 mods to get into the 12's I don't know what is it but alot of guys on here Have all the mods in the world and can't get lower than a 12.6 or 12.8? Let alone some guys in here that post there stock times are pretty high I always see sigs sayin 13.8,13.9, or 13.6 bone stock! I'm not trying to say I have the fastest f body I'm far from that and i'm not tryin to say that I'm a F-body wizard or a great driver but somethings gotta give. I run 12.7's all day with lid,tsp rumbler, and dr's. When I go to the track I see alot of f-bodies running slow numbers with no traction issue or anything of that matter, maybe some cars have and some don't I guess.

You need to go to your local Dragstrip on Test & Tune day and practice.By the way drag radials are street legal and anybody on here with a tricked out
F-body has to run them. If I put regular street tire on my ride what time the car isn't melting them I would be sideways and the car would be totally undrivable on the street.
