    Underhood belt squeak

Anyone know what component is likely to cause a belt related squeak/chirp? I notice it mostly at idle. Are the belt tensioners a know culprit or is there an idler pulley as well that could cause it? Its a 2000 with 32K. Ease of replacement comments. It's no 69...

    Thanks,

    Jack

mine does the exact same thing, at idle, its like a grass hopper chirp or a bird squawk. I'm going to try some grease-less lubricant and see what it does.

if you try anything, try belt dressing. i would just repalce them. belt dressing is like band-aid

yeah i think the lube/belt dressing might cause some slip and reduced power to the equipment being ran from the belt. I'm going to AA tomorrow to get a new belt.

I've heard tons of LS1's that have the squeak from the belt at cold startup, mine included.

I put belt dressing on it and it went away for a short while, so I think its the belt. Try something like Goodyear Gatorback, which is supposed to offer superior traction to a regular straight ribbed belt.

    +1 on the Goodyear Gatorback.
Also when your belt is off turn your idler pullies by hand. If you hear any noise what so ever, replace it. I just done that about 3 weeks ago and it made a world of difference. No more chirps at idle or a cold start. The pulley on the belt tensioner was the worst.

If you're going to do one pulley, do them both. The tensioner pulley and the idler pulley. I did both of mine and I still had the dreaded squeal/squeek/bird chirp. So what I did was replace the belt with a Goodyear Gatorback belt that I got from A-zone.

    Chirp all gone.

Replacing the pulleys is easy as is the belt. while replacing your belts try giving the Idler pulleys a good spin.. if they spin a lot the bearing is probably bad or going to be. I know the idler is like $21.00 and not sure about the tensioner it's easier to get to. My squeek has been driving me NUTS. so I've replaced just about everything as soon as i figure out how to get the little belt off I'll be a happy camper
