Time delay when turning ignition to run position?
I think I have a gremlin in the system somewhere. 2002 TA, WS-6, convert, 6 speed. 28k miles. When the key is moved to run there seems to be a time delay of maybe 1 or 2 seconds before the dash lights, gauges etc. will come on. It has not failed to start but, that may be next. I don't drive the car much but would hate to get stuck. Thanks for any ideas at all.

Could be a body control mod issue. The dash lights should turn on as soon as you turn the key to the first click/"acc". How is your battery?

Agree.. Have you tried cleaning up your battery teminals?
If not give it a shot,, also if they are clean check for tightness as well.
If your battery is old and/or weak it can cause all sorts of gremlins..

Thanks for the fast reply. The batt volts at the batt check 12.7 static. With heater fan on hi volts check 11.47.

The battery is about 6 mo. old. The terminals are tight and clean. Spinns starter at about normal speed?

My 02 SS does not turn on the lights until the E-Brake is pulled off. I have auto headlights. I don't know if this helps but your 12.7 reading is 1 to 1.5 volts too low. I think it may be the BMC as well. Good luck.
My ride is a 2002 Camaro SS SLP #3296 with 30k, LTH, 3" Y, CME, Frost tune, K&N, ported TB, Blackwing lid, Bellows, MSD, Denso Iridium, and 85mm MAF, Bilsteins, Eibach springs, SLP strut brace, Adj. Panhard, TA Girdle, UMI, Pro 5.0, Nitto NT555
My wife has a 2004 GTO with the rare SAP, 18" wheels, K&N Cold Air System, MSD, Ported TB, Frost tune, Denso Iridium, Flowmaster cat-back, 3200 Yank, 75k

The BCM will not lower voltage at the battery..
Sounds like a charging issue.
Check the excite wire coming from the big black plug on the back of the alt while you're @ it.
Look for plug damage and/or a weak excite.
PCM controls when to "excite" the alt to charge not the BCM..
Load test both the alt and the battery. Most auto parts will do it right in the carLast edited by Smittro; 08-20-2012 at 03:45 AM.

Smittro, 2002SSSLP,
I think I better back-up a little here. The voltage readings I gave was with the key in "run" and the engine "off". With the engine running batt reads over 14volts.
Thx

Ok,, well, I'd start looking at the ignition switch.
The BCM does power up the dash and so forth.
99% of the time BCM issues are system wide.
Meaning nothing inside will work @ all, things like,, wipers, windows, radio, dash board, and HVAC controls.
Not just the dash. The BCM gets it's "power up guages" orders from the ignition switch.Last edited by Smittro; 08-20-2012 at 05:37 AM.

Tomato, Tomoto. Potato, Pototo. Let's call the whole thing off. lol But really, I get what you are saying. This computer is called by different names by different MFG's and I am reverting back to my Mopar days. I have to study my GM dictionary more often. Thanks for the update.

Black- 1999 Trans Am
Hi, I noticed this thread and found myself wondering if the BCM could be causing my electrical problem. I have a 99TA that acts like it has an electrical surge to the gauge panel after it has been sitting overnight. When I turn on the ignition it starts easy, and the gauges all pin to the right and then settle back to zero. The trip odometer also resets to zero. Then everything starts and stops normally for the day. Also, the battery is new.
