    Thermostat worth it?

are those low temp thermostats worth it? do they even do anything? just curious since you don't hear too much about them.

Yes, but you have to change the temp that your fans come on as well.

Buy computer editing software (ex: HP Tuners) or take the car to a tuner.

I did mine when i did a coolant drain/fill, it is easy with the stat/housing all as one assembly. All f-body 160 stats operate between 175-180 so do not worry about any rumors or horror stories, it is not too cold and runs great.

I dunno about an LS1, but mine runs better colder.

I put a 180 in mine, cost $14 i think, but it fucked up and blew my intake gaskets, and that was $550 to fix

A lower temp stat doesn't make power; it helps keep warmer running cars cooler.

that would be my thoughts......more than making HP it would let you get away with a little more timing maybe. That being said...... I have a 160 in my car and my faster laps are always when I hot lap it. That could be viewed 2 ways though. Either the car is more up to temp but I think it has as much to do with heat soak sitting in the staging lanes as anything else because my temp gauge will typically sit around 170-180 waiting in the staging lanes so the car is definitely up to temp on that first pass.

LS1 engines are all aluminum, block, heads, the cooler you keep an aluminum engine running, the safer you are. Overheating an aluminum engine can cause cracking of the heads, and sometimes the block.

I have a 180F thermo (in 2001 Z28), with the fan on off set by a dyno tuner, and my city and highway temperatures have dropped dramaticly (I have Cyburdine digital water temperature guage). The down side is, that the cooler the engine runs, the more gas it uses, the computer reads the temperatures as being below operating temperature. I think this is a very minor trade off, and very well worth doing.

If you dont want to get a tuner to do it SLP makes a fan switch that plugs into computer then you can run your fans all the time, along with 160 deg tstat works great!
2002 Camaro Z28 Bolt ons, Flowmaster catback w/3" QTP electric cutout, Superchips tuned, Granatelli MAF, SLP cold air induction Lid & filter, ZEX powertune plugs, Taylor 10.4mm wires, 160 T-stat w/fan control, Eibach sportlines & BFG-KDW's on 17" SLP SS rims.
