starter and/or flywheel stripped
My starter has been making an odd clicking noise when cranking for about a year now, but had been looked at and I was told it wasn't harming anything and needed to be rebuilt. Well...never got around to that. Today, when taking off from a stop light I hear a loud rattling noise. When I get home I jack the car up expecting to find a shield or something loose, found nothing. Went to crank it up again, and just a loud whine as the starter turned and the motor did not. I will be pulling the starter tomorrow or monday--never done that and don't know how to/what to look for on the flywheel exactly--obviously ground teeth. Any advice before I get started is much appreciated!!! Thanks everybody!

I would say 70% of the time in my experience over the years it has been the flywheel. You can probably get down there and turn the flywheel a little bit to where there is still some teeth and it will start right up.
But the starter is only two bolts to drop and look.
GOOD LUCKDon't be afraid of the bottle!!! Be afraid of your tune!!!
