smoke from engine compartment

after driving around the city today, i smelled "burning rubber"
i opened the hood and there was smoke coming from the back end of the engine.
could this be a gasket leak causing oil to be burned??/
help

The "burned rubber" smell to me would suggest wiring, how ever it could also be leak and be burning oil. The oils pressure sending unit could have let go. Pull the dis stick to see how much you have lost and so see if you ahve possibly bigger problems ie head gasket. The intake tray seal coulds also have let go as well. Find the problem and fix asap before you see more than just smoke.

the oil amount seems to be fine
but the oil pressure is at 20 after the car has warmed up through the city driving
the oil pressure seems low but it has been low like this forever...

try reaching aroung the back of the engin to see if you can find anything odd, or signs of fluids. Also get underneith with a good light and have a look as well.

i looked underneath and there is oil all over the pan and everything else
i cant tell exactly where its coming from though

if its all over the pan, i would say valve cover gaskets. is it up on the block as well, or pan only?

i think its on the block too...thats whats causing the smoke from the engine compartment...????

btw, i just thought of this as well...check your power steering lines. mine was rubbing and eventually wore a hole through getting PSF all over the block and pan until i located the problem. btw, this was on my old 95 z28 LT1 car not my current SS...

first check the valve covers and then work your way down the engine. last year i started to leak oil and smelled the burning. it was coming from the rear of the engine. turned out to be a bad gasket on the oil filter.

Intake manifold leaks in the rear of the engine all the time, I would check that first, also I just looked up oil pressure specs.....at normal operating temp at least 6 psi @ 1000rpm, at least 18psi @ 2000rpm and 24psi @ 4000 rpm....looks like your oil pressure is fine, stick your hand behind the lower intake in the rear and see if there is oil up there. It also could be that oil filter adapter, but start up high.

those are lie bare minnimum specs. my PSI is 45 cold 30 warm at idle... goes up to 60 PSI when I get on it

I thought everything after 98 were dummy gauges. Either hook it up to a scanner or have a friend with efi live or hp tuners to tell you what it really is. The valve cover gaskets are reusable, so they usually dont blow out. You would have to order them, no one around here had them in stock. Just start from the top and work your way down when looking for the leak.

Also, my oil psi is between 30 and 35 when warmed up. If you get a new oil pump you have to have it shimmed to up the pressure, porting it just allows for more oil to flow through.

im gonna fix the leak before the new pump...
