if there is no plate, its just a fix-it ticket
and yea you'll be wasting 250 on the grille

You can either get one of those flip ones or get the SLP brakcet. The SLP bracket bolts to the bottom of the front bumper.

This is what I did on both of our 4th gens, and drove them for years like that. Got pulled over only a couple times but once I pointed it out they let it slide.
Most of the time though, as long as the cop has a head on view of the car, the plate can easily be seen, and I found that 99% of the time it was just fine.
Another trick I used it for was a form of curb feeler. I mounted mine to hang about 2 inches below the air dam. Not only did it make it easier to see, but it made a distinct metallic sound when it touched the pavement and let me know I was getting close to scraping on those steep driveways and such.Last edited by Firebirdjones; 11-18-2010 at 02:56 PM.

I used the bracket from SLP-I am in Texas so must have the plate. You get used to it after awhile. It bolts to the bottom of bumper cover and you can use velcro or bolt it to the front so it doesn't flop at speed

There's a guy with a 95-97 Z with a flip bracket that goes the the same summer car show I go to. Looks nice. Or you could put the front plate on the passenger side of your dashboard like I have seen. I have even seen pics of the front plate on the front air dam.
