slp cold air kit for t/a problem
My brother has a 98 trans am, not a ws6. He bought the slp cold air kit. The new filter and lid don't fit the stock air box base. Did anyone else have this problem? On a hunch, he bought a gm ws6 base and everything fit. I didn't like the idea of having to buy an additional $100 piece of plastic to make this kit fit. They said this kit would fit any 98-99 v8 firebird or t/a. I have been going round and round with slp for the past 2 weeks. I explain the problem and they either don't know what I'm talking about, or I get the "you're not doing it right" response. I haven't heard from them in a week; I guess they're ignoring me. Slp is supposed to be the king of these cars. I don't see why they don't understand.

Umm so you fixed the issue? If your buddy bought a new lower airbox then im guessin the previous owner put the wrong part on it, say after a wreck or a mod gone wrong. Just out of curiousity how didnt it fit?

The car wasn't wrecked and the part number on the stock base was correct for 98. The stock base was too shallow for the new filter. The tube at the back of the new lid would hit the base before you could engage the 4 tabs at the back. There is a good 3/4" of clearance before they would engage. Maybe this is an early 98 thing, but you would think slp would know about it since they are the experts on these cars. The idea of having to buy an additional $100 piece of plastic to make an already expensive kit fit is what bugs me. The customer service that doesn't know what I'm talking about makes me mad. I just get the "you did it wrong" comment.

you should be able to hit the 4 tabs at an angle then close it ?..., is the filter riding higher in the back ?, maybe a seam or something in the way that keeps it from sitting right in the back ?

Mine was a bit tricky on my 2000 Z28. I was not angling the lid (up in the front) and starting into the rear tabs then pushing hard. While doing the TB mod I noticed it was pretty easy with the bellows not tightened to the TB before securing the Lid.That way the bellows is fully seated to the TB (aft position) making for Lid fit alot easier.

You can angle the lid any which way and it won't fit. Even if you don't install the filter it won't fit, so it's not a clearance problem there. What other company makes a intake kit like this? We have a ws6 copy hood. Is there any kit that may seal to the hood?

Well im not calling you a liar but slp has been doing this stuff for a long while and if they havent addressed the issue then it probly doesnt exist...
Im sure your not the only person too order the lid for that car, So i would say something wasnt right on your end not slp's.
