Silverado SS tranny cooler

A buddy of mine had a tranny cooler just lying around his garage, and it looked as though it was attached to an engine cooler. He said it came off a chevy silverado SS. He went ahead and gave it to me (minus the engine oil cooler), and attached it for me. Are these good for racing?, or just good for hot ass days and making your tranny last longer. My question is should I still put in the money for an aftermarket tranny cooler or is this good enough?

I'm asking cuz I wanted to get a stall installed, and I was told a tranny cooler is needed. SO is this SS silverado tranny cooler good enough for a stall install??
