short grinding noise
I noticed twice today, that upon turning the engine over, their was a short (1 sec) grinding noise, and it happens the second the engine is capable of turning on its own. Would that be a sign of a failing starter?

Phantom Black Metallic- 2004 GTO M6
Sounds that way. The gear drive isn't retracting into the starter as fast as it should be, thus grinding along the flywheel/flexplate.

No recommendations, however, don't let it go too long as starters have been known to take out chunks of the engine block in extreme failures.
