shifter problem with auto
hey guys... i guess not really a problem but an annoyance. The plastic button in the shifter seems to be sticking out to far. If i dont push it just right it will get stuck and not push in smoothly... I can pretty much stick my finger tip in the button from underneath when its all the way out(theres the little open space underneath from the molding process i guess) . Hard to explain but maybe you know what i mean.
Any tips on how to remove and fix this part?

I have a Firebird shifter on my car, don't know if there's a way to fix what you're talking about without getting a new one. Try taking it off so you can get a better look at it. Turn the key on so you can move the shifter back, remove the small "staple" midway down the front of the handle with a small screw driver or needle nose plyers, pull handle straight up. Maybe you can file the plastic button down, lubricate it or something???? Hope this helps...

it may have somehow popped out over some plastic retainer or whatnot... I bet if you pull it off like 2001nbmz28 says, you can just reassemble it properly...
also, you can get aftermarket shifters too...

okay man, if you take off the shifter (which will NOT break anything,) you will see a metal rod, which is the main linkage, and inside the rod, is a secondary metal 'button' on top... the button on the side of the shifter simply pushes that down...
